Possible broken pelvis - 3 month old kitten :(

Hi,

anybody any experience of this? My little man is currently at the vets, having pushed his luck with a broken cupboard door which fell on him this afternoon.

I'm distraught - it's my fault, it's been broken for a week or so and I'd fixed it once and then it broke again (the hinge) then hoovering this afternoon I caught the bottom of the door and it fell off completely. Before I'd managed to get a screwdriver I propped the door (under kitchen sink cupboard door) and carried on cleaning - planning to fix it afterwards. less than 5 mins later - crash and the kitten screamed. At first I thought he'd just shocked himself but he was meowing and crying in pain.

I took him to the vets hoping it was a broken leg (hoping!) and she said she was more concerned about a broken pelvis!!!! Sad Sad

He's being kept in overnight on strong painkillers and sedated and x-rayed in the morning.

I've Googled to see if it's recoverable (if it is his pelvis) and although it is life threatening it is something he can recover from, if there's no nerve damage - but he'd need to be on 'cage rest' for up to 3 months! He's very active and an outdoors kitten....I can barely keep him in! I wonder what would be the kindest thing to do.

I can't bear to think about having him put to sleep.....but I can't bear to think of him being caged for 3 months and then an indoor cat (as that's recommended). My head's a mess, I'm so upset.

Don't even know what I expect anybody to say - just need to get it out Sad

"bored"
he's conning you
a bit like the cats that arrive at the door "hungry"
if you were not aware of where he was he'd be asleep all day
and left to his own devices he probably will - and its the best thing

Old cat's was broken in 4 places - both sides front and back - Volvos do that to cats
he never had painkillers, he never had surgery, he just got better slowly.

when you go into the room with him to clean up, make sure the room door is shut and put food in the cage soon.

what he needs is to sleep wash and heal - he'll drive you potty within a couple of months!

Well, we've had some good news. Vet spoke to the orthopedic surgeon and he has said that he would recommend NOT cage resting for another 6 weeks. His concern is that as he's so young his muscles need to develop and if he's in a cage, this won't happen. So he can come out as of next Thursday as he'd then have had 3 and a bit weeks cage rest and OS says that the bones would have started to heal. I'm not letting him out of the house though, he's mad as a box of frogs and I just know he'd try and climb a tree!

After 2 weeks he'll be chekced and if the lame-ness hasn't improved, re x-rayed and the surgeon will then decide where's best to go from there.

So, fingers crossed!

Talkin - yes, I agree, he is very good at the 'I'm bored' 'I'm hungry' so I shouldn't be fooled by those big eyes and general fluffiness!

x

excellent news
old cat was 13 when he was hit so bone/muscle growth was not an issue
but your kitten WILL wrap you round his dew claw if you hive him 1/10 of a chance

when old cat broke both jaws and his skull we did not operate - just waited - they are amazing at healing (that one was an altercation with a bus)
he still went through the (locked) cat flap with both jaws wired, one eye sewn shut to let it heal and an elizabethan collar on ....

RhondaRoo · 14/11/2011 18:11

oh, poor old cat! I won't admit to stiffling a giggle at the locked cat flap tale Grin

As for being wrapped around his dew claw....yep am wrapped so tightly I'm tangled!!

3 more days and he's free!

feel free to laugh out loud - we did - and so did the vet when she had to reset the wires on his jaws where he had mangled them.

remember that your kitten will make a right lash up of stairs the first time he tries ....

RhondaRoo · 15/11/2011 18:29

oh the poor thing! hee hee.

Bert is currently clinging to the top of his cage....I think he's feeling better Hmm, which is worrying! I just know this will be the first of many scrapes, he's far too inquisitive/mad for it not to be!!

Hello, so I need some advice please. I have a 10 week old kitten, got him the other day. He was fine up until last week, he just stopped walking, don’t know if he injured himself or what. He tries so hard to walk and sometimes he can but not far and ends up falling over. He cry’s in pain when putting pressure on the back legs, but other than that he’s a normal male kitten. Plays with his toys, uses the littler box, I mean I’m stumped. Then my spouse takes him to a vet to get checked out and says it’s 500 for an exam X-ray and some pills and his quality of life will prolly be bad and I should really consider putting him down. I by all means don’t want the cat in any pain but I feel that the vet was wrong, and I am getting a second opinion. I just wanna know some other people’s thoughts on this, do you think we can heal him and fix this? IV read most of these posts and from what I’m reading your giving me lots of hope but I need a little more reassurance please. Thank you for reading and any info is greatly appreciate. 😁

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2020 08:09

Only the vet can tell you, once you’ve got the X-ray done you can go from there.

Is there a pdsa vet nearby? Would you qualify for help from them?.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 07/07/2020 10:08

@Dantonj89
You said you got the cat the other day, but then you say the cat was fine until last week?
Something must have happened, what did the vet suggest?

Dantonj89 · 07/07/2020 11:19

Just so everyone knows I got the cat from my father in law. He has a barn cat that gets pregnant all the time and he takes the kittens and adopts them out to his friends and family. Also I dont need help paying for his bills, I just think 500 for a vet visit and xrays is way too much. Hope this info helps.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 07/07/2020 11:37

Maybe your father in law should spay the barn cat. Ring around some other vets and ask how much they'd charge for xrays?

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2020 11:42

Bloody hell that cats uterus must be like tissue paper by now.

Cauliflowerpowerpop · 07/07/2020 19:28

@Dantonj89 so did you get the x-ray done or not? Just pay for the treatment, any vet will require an x-ray to find out what the situation is. I doubt very much the painkillers would be a prohibitive cost. Did you not even get the pills then to make your kitten comfortable whilst you seek the second opinion?
You really need to step up and be a better and more responsible owner for your kitten.
Your spouse doesn’t sound very articulate at all, I don’t really think a conversation with a vet would go the way you describe here - advising an x-ray and advising putting down before having the results of the x-ray.
Also your father in law needs to arrange for the barn cat to be spayed.

Dantonj89 · 07/07/2020 19:36

First of all don’t judge a book by its cover because you sound very stupid right now. I am one of the best animal lovers and Care fours that there is in for you to tell me that me and my spouse are not good enough to take care of this cat is very wrong so before you judge something maybe you should ask the questions first before judging because guess what there’s nothing wrong with my cat my x-rays came out great nothing is broken and there’s no issues so before you decide that you want to go on here and start running your mouth about something get the fucking fax first because that bullshit I am going to delete all of my comments now and post because there’s no need for me to be on here when I’m gonna have stupid people telling me stuff that I am not capable of taking care of my animals I am very capable of taking care of my animals obviously

Cauliflowerpowerpop · 07/07/2020 19:48

@Dantonj89 I’m glad your kitten is OK. That must have been some miracle treatment you managed to arrange, all in the same day. From not being able to walk and being advised to put him down, he is now perfectly fine and there are no issues?
If you were a true animal lover as you say, you would have arranged for your cat’s mum to be neutered.
I sincerely hope this cat has been made up in your imagination because you don’t sound like a nice person at all.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2020 19:50

Well that escalated. It’s facts, not fax.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 07/07/2020 20:27

Nope, didn't understand a word of that.

JammyHands · 08/07/2020 03:52

No and I don’t see how someone can be saying it’s not worth £500 for treatment for a kitten one minute and then present themselves as a great cat lover the next.
