How much does your cat weigh?

I just weighed porker cat and he was 6.65kg. He's just a standard sized moggie and he is now on a stricter diet than before. He's only 3 and I feel guilty about his size.

No. 1 cat weighs 6.4kg but is much larger and lithe and sleek and a healthy weight for his size. He's 7.

My parents cat is tiny and dainty in comparison (3kg) but I always seem to end up with hulking brutes.

I have the extremes of two cats..
My little furry girl (longhair torti, and very feisty) weighs 3 kg ..light but ridiculously healthy. She is 11

My boy is a Maine Coone.. BIG breed... and a big example. he is currently just under 10 kg!! Not a jelly belly in sight, he is lean as can be but the size of a medium dog:) I'm always at the vets with him as he has many allergies (damn pedigree!) and as I just carry him in (he's also very soft, cuddly and dumb as a rock) we get gasps of 'wow what IS he?!)

He's been photographed by the vet (who happens to be a TV famous one) because he is is vaiiiryyyy handsome and big. I love that people can't believe the size of him and his wild hairy lynx look:) He really is BIG.

Bibi & wufty my fatty has the flappy undercarriage thing and he's a handsome tabby, but his legs are a tad on the short side given his underhang.

Medusa your maine coon sounds fab would love to see a pic of him.

cant Do kg (you'll have o work it out!!) so in lbs,
oldest cat, 10 years old weighs...12 lb
next one, 7 years old....is a huge ginger/cream tabby and solid weighs 15lbs
and the baby who is 16 months weighs 10 lbs but still has a lot of growing to do

All neutered boys.

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 24/09/2011 18:23

Coldsancerre..I've just put a pic of my boy on my profile. I'll get someone to hold him later for a snap so you can see his size properly:)

ColdSancerre · 24/09/2011 20:09

He's gorgeous! Like you say he looks very slim and lean so he must be colossal as he's so in proportion. Is he hard to care for with that lovely coat?

We do brush him when he is in the mood :) He is utterly soppy and dumb as a plank and you can do anything to him!! He gets horribly matted in spring as Maine Coons have a double coat, the winter layer moults in spring and turns into matted felt like stuff... I lie him down and trim his undersides and shaggy legs :) He is so daft he just lies there while I brush his armpits!

The downside is he is much more 'sensitive' than a moggy cat.. many allergies and has regular steroids to combat itchy skin. I will get my son to hold him tomorrow as it's the only way you see how mahoosive he is:)

ColdSancerre · 25/09/2011 07:36

Oh my old ginger had permanent steroids for itchy skin, very sensitive to fleas they thought so even one bite would set him off. The said oh it might shorten his life a little but he needs it. I got him at 10 and he was on steroids until he died at 19, so if it shortened his life it wasn't by much.

Just added a pic of him being held by DS1 (average sized 18 yr old!). Not great as my flash didn't go off but you can get the general idea (and his less than pleased expression!) He also has a FABULOUS tail which you can't see:)

MitmoodyCow · 25/09/2011 21:42

How laid-back? He is lovely, I covet him.

Oeufman · 25/09/2011 22:28

Also got a daft ginger boy Maine Coone - 7.6 kg but he is not fully grown yet!!

Like you medusa I carry his nibs in to the vet in my arms (he does not fit into a cat cage) and he travels sat in one of the kids old car seats!! He is quite the celebrity at his vets (he wouldn't be letting his vet steal the limelight) and is for "barking" his warning if they are pushing his inherent dopiness just too far. Our kids just adore him and he takes part in his clumsy oversized kitten way in so much family life. He is a star at giving cuddles in bed to any child upset, in need of a chat with a discreet listener or a sick one. His best friend is a geriatric boxer, who loves him so much he is the ONLY thing allowed between her and her beloved stove....

sphil · 25/09/2011 22:34

Blimey. We've just adopted a cat from a rescue centre - she is between 18 months and two years old (they think) and only weighs 2.4kg. The centre people told us she is underweight (she had kittens very young) and have advised feeding her 3x a day - two biscuits (handful each time) and one meat sachet. She has licked the bowl clean each time today and is hovering round her bowl hopefully now. Her last meal was at 5pm.

Should I be feeding her more - or putting food down overnight?

Catsmamma · 25/09/2011 22:36

I have a massive and completely ordinary ginger Norwegian Forest Cat, he was over a stone at last vet visit
(he really does look like a NFC!!)
Vet said he was fine, not overweight, just a big cat.

and of the two others, Puppykitten is completely average and his sister is a wee dot, probably only 6 lbs with her heavy whiskers on.

MitmoodyCow · 25/09/2011 22:43

sphil it depends on her build. Some cats are slight. Does she look thin? Is her spine prominent? If she does then she still needs feeding up in line with the advice you have, but I would increase the biscuits a touch until she gets to a stage where she looks healthy but not fat.

sphil · 26/09/2011 20:58

She's slight and thin, but her spine isnt very prominent. I think she has been slowly putting on weight at the centre and will continue to do so.

Lottie4 · 28/09/2011 10:35

My girl weighs 5.65kg and my boy 6.85kg (everyone says he is a big boned cat though). I asked my vet about their weight who said they do have flabby tummies but that's half expected as they get older (12 years old). I have a friend however whose cat is 5.1kg and she is like a big fat balloon with paws poking out, so I think you need to judge on how they look not what they weigh and only reduce food if you think it is a problem. It might be a good idea to ask the vet what he/she thinks next time you have an annual check up.

cambridgeferret · 01/10/2011 11:42

Cat 1 is 2.4kg and cat 2 2.7kg. They're elderly though (17 and 16) so have lost muscle - at her peak C1 was 5.5kg and the vet said she was very overweight. Cat 2 was a slightly smaller 4.2kg at peak.

ColdSancerre · 01/10/2011 12:00

Bless them Cambridge, I do love oldies but seeing them decline is difficult. My old boy was 5.5kg in his prime but went down to around 2kg by the end and he was quite a large tom.
