Oh I just don't want to leave her in a cattery.

When I go on holiday. I don't like that they're kept in cages at all. Even if the cage is big with an indoor and outdoor bit. :(
Will she hate it terribly? She's nearly 1 year, indoor living, no other pets.

we have had same problem with indoor cat in past - how long are you away for?

can someone come to your house to feed?

we have tried all sorts of variations - good and bad catteries = diff experiences.trouble is you don't really know until you come back.

we also had someone who came to house to feed - she wrote me a letter to say siamese was aggresive to her and she wouldn't be coming back.

what works for us now is just to go for a few days at a time and get one of ds pals to feed the cat sliced meat/sachets of cat food through letter box.

I get a mate or my mum to pop in once a day for mine. Is that not an option for you?? House cats needs lots of toys and scratching posts anyway, so it's not like she's going to get -any more bored

If someone is going to feed for you while you are away it is not acceptable to shove some food through the letter box like you suggest Sharbie. What happens if the cat gets sick or injured? You have a duty of care as an owner to ensure that your cat is properly looked after so please get someone who can actually access your house and see the cat properly and if necessary obtain veterinary help for it. If that isn't possible then the cattery is a much kinder option.

if you have an indoor cat, don't you need to change the litter tray? How can they do that through the letter box?

sharbie · 22/05/2011 23:12

we have a glass front door and the cat comes to the door for his food so dss' friend knows to call us if the cat isn't there or it looks like things aren't right.

glass doors at the back of the house as well so he can look through the back to and see if cat is running about ok.

we put 2 or 3 litter trays out and paper - it has worked fine so far.

ironically cat got injured at a cattery and they denied all knowledge.this way works for us.

Mine needs cuddles and fuss, she's a right tart for people she knows! Food through the letter box would feel too stark for us, I like to know that she has company at least for a few minutes a day and grandma spoils her rotten

I have found some pet sitting services near by and will probably use them. Thanks for your help.

Glad you've found a pet sitting service. We've had always had a good experience with ours and it's nice to know that the house is being checked on as well while we're away.

We've always used some kind of agency that sends a person around every day to feed our cats. That person picks up the post dropped on the mat, cleans the litter tray, cuddles the cats. If there's a problem, they call or text. Even if there isn't a problem, they call or text just to let us know cats are OK. DH finds it a bit bizarre to receive a message on holiday that 'fibbles is happy and doing fine' but I like it.

Found our current carer through a dog walking service but when we were in London we used an agency run by some little old ladies who absolutely spoiled the cats with attention and treats.

Good luck with yours.
