Allergic to flea treatment?

I just thought I would drip by and ask if anyone had ever had a cat that was allergic to the flea treatment given by vets? The spot on stuff? SlightCat seems to have very dry skin just in the area where I apply it and have recently noticed a bit of hair loss there too. Its beginning to look a bit sore too :(

Obviously I will take her to the vets next week, but I thought I'd see what others had to say first!

Nothing has been changes in the house, same food for her as always, same washing powders, cleaning products etc. She does go out during the day but not at night and there hasn't beenany changes in routine or anything.

My mum's cat struggled greatly with the popular drops on the back of the neck flea treatments - writhing about on her back trying to rub it off herself, leaving a greasy stain and acting as if it really itched and bothered her, with lots of dramatic scratching and attempted licking. She ended up with a rather pathetic looking thin-haired scruffy patch on the back of her neck - but I'm not sure if it was the actual chemistry of the treatment, or her quite violent dislike of it that caused the thin patchy bit of fur.

Mum ended up getting the 6-monthly program injections at the vet for the cat instead, and the cat hasn't had a flea problem since - that was about 5 years ago.

My two cats also have program injections every 6 months, and also do not have any flea issues. I find it much easier to just let a vet give a simple injection every 6 months, than wrestling with cats who really do not appreciate flea-treatments. It is slightly more costly to have the injections than to do the drops, but I personally think the lack of cat-hassle is worth it Grin

Thankyou piggles, I'll ask the vet about that when I go, he is a good traveller so it wouldn't bother her about a regular car trip and although the actual administration doesn't bother her I can be very forgetful a six monthly trip does sound a lot less hassle than monthly fussing!
