cat out of sorts

Hi
We have a one year old male cat who is normally really lively and has done nothing but sleep all weekend.
I think he has bad breath, he's eating and drinking okay (eating a bit less than normal), keeps yawning, is less patient with us stroking him, hasn't made a noise for a couple of days and just looks a bit pathetic.

Would you take him to the vet? Any ideas what could be up with him

Hi, TBH I think most cats have bad breath Grin! When you say he is less patient with you stroking him, do you think he feels pain or tenderness when you stroke him?

Is there any chance he has been in contact with a toad as our cat has caught toads in the past and been unwell for a few days after as they secrete a poison? Or possibly an abscess under a tooth (might explain bad breath) or damaged tooth? Or cystitis? Is he weeing OK? Male cats can be susceptible to ureteric obstruction from stones especially if they eat dry food.

I would see how he is tomorrow and then make a decision on the vets.

Well, if you're still concerned tomorrow, I would take him to the vet. No harm in having him checked over, and cats are good at hiding what's bothering them.

Is he a scrapper? Young male cats (even neutered) that are territorial can be quite prone to getting fight injuries - sometimes cat bite abscesses which are not always all that visible - until they burst!! It can make them seem a bit under the weather as they're usually running a temperature if they have one of these abscesses. however, I agree that the best thing to do is just see how he is tomorrow and then take him to the vet.....

What peggotty said - one of our neutered male rising-twos was just like this a few weeks ago. Took him to the vet and he was running a temperature, almost certainly bitten. He perked up so fast with painkillers and antibiotics I could hardly believe it. Got bitten again four days later, sigh.

Thanks everyone
On reflection I don't think his breath is worse than normal!

I haven't seen any toads but you never know I suppose, something like that would make sense

Have booked an appointment with the vet for tomorrow
