Urgent help please - horrendous cat situation, should i pts?

This is so upsetting. Please don't read if you're squeamish.

My cat was attacked by a dog last night. At first I though she was ok, but when I picked her up, I saw that her mouth was in a real state. I thought she had a tooth hanging loose, but when I looked closer, I saw that it is her lower jawbone hanging out of her mouth.

I live on a small island where there is no vet. A vet comes here on Tuesday and Thursday. I called her emergency number and explained the situation and she said she'd see me first thing Tuesday.

The cat would not stay inside (is really a countryside, outdoor cat and only comes in for food) and was out for the night and all day today. I've just brought her in and given her some soup and milk, both of which she wolfed. She even purred when I picked her up Sad. She went straight out again after eating, but I got a look at her mouth and it looks awful.

Should I wait until Tuesday, or would I be better to take her down to the Shelter today, where they could not treat her but could pts? Is there any hope for a cat with a badly broken jaw, or am I being horrible waiting for her to see the vet on Tuesday while she suffers?

That's good news, your cat sounds like a feisty little character.

Sorry, have been lurking, and can now return to wondering if you're on the same BVI as my cousin and his family. Is there a clue in your name? :)

is it afternoon yet?

how's she doing? she sounds like a tough-nut. does she have a name?

Tolalola · 18/05/2011 00:40

So happy! My brilliant little cat is home and very purry.
Yes she does have a name - DS, who's 3, named her Mrs. P. No idea why, but it stuck. My friend found her dumped in a skipwhen she was tiny during a massive storm last November, so she's only a baby, really.

When the vet got her under GA and went in, it wasn't nearly as bad as we all initially thought. What we thought was her jawbone sticking out was a broken canine tooth pointing straight out of her mouth and still attached to her jawbone.

What we thought was a fracture turned out to be an evulsion - i.e. the skin had basically been sliced away and peeled back from the jawbone, so the bone was laid bare. Still really nasty, but way easier to fix.

So she's lost some teeth which had to be extracted and has a load of stitches inside her mouth (ow!) but the bone is intact. She's gobbled a whole can of cat food (she's never had canned food before, only dry biscuits, so she thinks she's in heaven).

Thanks again everyone for all your reassurance. I was really panicking when I first posted and you were all so helpful and nice.

Yes Don'tCallMeBaby - clue's in the name!

aww bless her! that does sound very nasty but it is a good thing that it wasn't as bad as you feared. lots of cuddles now for Mrs. P. then.

i had a cat who fell one time and one of her teeth went through the bottom of her jaw and was sticking out of the underside of her chin. that was pretty horrific. so i can only imagine how terrible you felt about Mrs. P.

let's hope it all heals nicely now and she doesn't get too used to the wet food :)

I am so glad she is home and mendingSmile

Hope she is back to her old self soon.

Heh, same island. I must admit, I'm kinda glad my cousin is so incredibly slack at posting to Facebook - the pictures of the kids swimming in the blue, blue sea with the blue, blue sky had me very Envy. Still, apparently they have a big enough house for guests now ...
