Cat has lost his purr

My 7 year old cat had the shock of his life 5 weeks ago when we brought newborn DD home from hospital. He hid upstairs for the first few days, has eventually come down and we are making sure he gets a bit of fuss everyday. However, he has lost his purr. He used to be very purry but now nothing - has anyone else had this happen? He doesn't seem overly stressed in himself, is eating fine and will still let us stroke him so not sure what's going on with the purr. Thanks,

Didn't happen with my cats when the DDs were born so no personal advice to offer, sorry, but I have heard that purring is partly a pleasure thing i.e. when being stroked, and partly a general communication tool, like we would say 'mm... oh right? ... yes...' in a conversation. So maybe he just isn't feeling very 'chatty' towards you at the moment with all the changes in the house. Not sure there's much you do about that really, apart from continuing to make a fuss of him.

Congratulations on your DD by the way! Grin

Thanks Chish. He sat on my lap today so hopefully he's getting used to the idea.

I have two cats (one is 15 and the other is 8) they both were a bit scared when I brought my newborn home 6 weeks ago. They are both really chilled out about the baby but this helped out with a feliway defuser. It really relaxes them and it helps. Trust me it works.

Good luck I hope you cat gets his purr back soon.
