Young cat suddenly pooing on carpet...

Hello! Really grateful for some advice.

We have a 7 month old tabby in excellent health. She has been brilliant at using her litter tray since we got her (at 9 weeks). She is highly fastidious and her litter tray is emptied and cleaned every day.

Yesterday when we were both out she pooed on the carpet in the hall and in the bedroom. They weren't 'hidden' in any way - it looked almost like a dirty protest! she has only done this once before, which was when we had a lot of houseguests for a weekend.

There have been no changes to her routine, or her food. No-one else has been in the house. I have noticed that she has become quite yowly and very needy lately - she is an exceptionally affectionate cat but even more so at the moment. Oh to take a wee in peace Grin.

She is due to be spayed, jabbed and chipped this month.

Does anyone have any idea what can be causing her to poo outside her litter tray? DH says it's 'because she needs spaying' but I am unconvinced....

About to go offline for a while so apols if no answers for a bit. Would be very grateful for any advice.

Couple of things spring to mind:

  1. Is the litter tray overlooked by any windows? You might have some local peeping toms (literally!) who are putting her off.
  2. Is the litter tray TOO clean? Sometimes cleaning fluid or no pee/poop in the litterbox will put them off using it. Try simply emptying rather than cleaning it and see if that makes a difference.
  3. Clean whereever she's pooped using those animal sprays you get and make it really unattractive to poo there again by covering in tin foil or stickytape etc.

Sometimes a bit of guesswork is needed....
