My cat has kidney failure. Took her to the vet again and he said she is doing well.

here

By this morning she had been sick and hasn't asked for any food. She missed 3 meals last week as she wouldn't eat and then we gave her tinned tuna and she had some. Have been told to give her anything she will eat and mix some powder with it but she is laid next to me not bothering to meow for food. She is a naughty clever girl so if I get her some chicken today and she eats that she will hold out again from her special diet in the hope she gets more chicken or tuna. The vet appointment last week was £105 so I am all out of money except for about £20 so don't really want to take her again because she isn't eating but I don't know what to do.

Often cats with renal failure have impaired sense of smell, cats will not eat what they can not smell. Food from the fridge has reduced smell so warming food up ever so slightly can help. In the clinic we spoil tempt our patients with hot cooked chicken from a supermarket counter for some reason it is much more tempting than that which we cook.
Warming the cat food in the microwave for about 10s if it is wet can also help make that more interesting.

She asked for her food but hasn't eaten much of it. I think she has decided she doesn't like chicken flavour now. I will wait a bit and then warm it up so if she has had something she might not want more now but will try later. Thanks for the idea.

She just got up and really looked at me so I said "You are trying to tell me something aren't you?" Just seen the time and I think she wants to go to bed and get her bedtime biscuits. She has got off the sofa and is now looking at DH.

Right, she ate tinned tuna for breakfast but has refused her kidney diet food.

Have you tried different renal diets or did the vet just give you one type/manufacturer? There are a few different manufacturers of veterinary prescription diets and some are preferred to others by cats so it is worth asking the vet if they have others you can try. Meanwhile eating something is better than eating nothing so keep tempting your cat and if probs continue please go back to the vet again with her. Things do change over even short periods of time. A month ago my own cat was not well and bloods only showed some kidney problems, but he continued to decline. I repeated his bloods and this time it has shown he is diabetic - that was not showing in bloods a month ago so definately things can happen and change, though this sort of disease pattern is not common I hasten to add!

She is due back at the vets in a couple of weeks. He did say we could try a different brand iirc. She has eaten a bit if breakfast today. She is getting a lot less cooperative over her medication though and will bite me.
