She will be 6 weeks old.

We do already have a cat but we got her at 18mths so not really a kitten.

So what do I need to buy ? So far on the list I have scratch post, kitten food (which one?), bowls, litter tray and cat litter and toys.

When do they have their first injection ? and how long before they can go out ??

Also, how best to introduce her to our cat, who thinks she rules the world ?

aaaaaah how cute, I'm so jealous! :)
Mine is 2 years, and I keep feeling tempted to get another one....but being strong....
I got him at 10 weeks, so was litter trained and on solids - the first few days I slept with him on the sofa, so he could be near the kitchen (food) and bathroom (litter tray). He was a bit of a pain as he never slept for more than 5 hrs.....ahem....and still doesn't!
anyhow, food wise, it depends what your budget is and what you feed your other cat - I'm quite fussy, but can recommend Pets at Home and Zooplus, you order online and they deliver for free!
My cat has half and half, so pouch am and pm, and biscuits in a bowl at all times (he is one cat only, so not sure if this would work with 2?)
In terms of vet, you need to take it in to be registered sooner rather than later, first vaccinations are at 3 months I think and then 2nd set at 6? cant remember exactly....after that it;s a booster once a year.
Re litter tray: he was always v good, the only probs I encountered was when he was upstairs in my bedroom he had a few accidents as it was too far to make it to bathroom, so I put a 2nd litter tray in my bedroom and that solved it. The best litter is the silica crystals, they are amazing, no smell at all. They sell them online and also in supermarkets. You will need tray until well after the cat starts going outside, once neutered and going out, they will keep coming back in to use litter tray, but will gradually stop over a few weeks.
Re microchipping, I did mine at the same time as neutering (at 6 months) as it was a bit cheaper plus less stressful (mine hates the cat box)
Re your other cat, get a feliway diffuser plug in, and put it on asap, that will help. The other thing I read was to rub kitten with a cloth or towel beforehand and then let your cat sniff it, so it starts to get used to it's scent. With any luck your older cat will take over as mummy (or daddy?) so you should be fine! good luck!

Missfoodie, that is such a helpful post, thankyou so much.

Our current cat (Tilly) normally has supermarkets own pouches and dry food, and will eat pretty much anything.

I got 96 pouches of cat food today from pets at home for £15 Grin

Two litter trays sounds like a good idea, so will grab two of those next time i'm out.

Tilly is quite a bossy cat and i think initially she will not be happy, but the kitten (Gypsy) seems quite fiesty so i am hoping they will be fine eventually and like you say it would be nice if Tilly took her under her wing a bit.

I think you have to keep them in seperate rooms and then swap them over so they get used to each others sent. My sil did this for a week and her cat accepted the kitten. If you just put them in the same room your cat will want a scrap to assert her territory. Plus she'll be thinking WTF is that? Andy why is everyone fussing it.

And get some ping pong balls all my cats have loved them

Besom · 27/03/2011 21:55

two things:

Be careful with a hot bath you may have run for yourself - they are quite likely to jump in and scald themselves.

Also, they're not very good at pooing and not getting it on paws. So when she comes out of the litter just check that she's not about to walk it all over your cream carpet or whatever.

I'm jealous - kittens are so lovely.

We have just got a 6 week old kitten,he came with fleas and need de-worming too(quite common I here) Can't treat the fleas until he is 8 weeks old.The De-worming stuff we bought from Pets at HOme (Supermarket Flea and De-worming stuff is rubbish as are Flea Collars apparently)have to treat him 2 weekly initially then monthly.
We were told he was using a Litter Tray, but have yet to see this,as he has had a few accidents and prefers to try and eat the litter!

Sawyer64 · 28/03/2011 00:31

Oh and with the Vacs we have been advised to contact the Vets as they need them Asap, maybe 8 weeks +

MissFoodie · 28/03/2011 11:24

yes, you should register with vet as soon as you have the kitten, this also allows the vet to check it over, weigh it, etc (you'll be amazed at how much they grow in so little time, so it's nice to keep a chart!)
the vet will give you frontline (for fleas, its the best stuff, and you can buy online later) and worming tab, which they have to have once a month until they are 1, then once every 3 months. The frontline is every month forever.
and ps, look forward to being woken up at 5am by kitty biting your feet!
:)

I'm so jealous. I love kittens, and miss my cats (now all sadly departed, and buried in the field behind my mum's house).

You'll definitely need a cardboard box, kittens love them, and the little ingrates will always choose them over shop bought toys.

Ditto crisp packets tied in knots for chasing practice.
