Are pedigree cats more sociable?

I'm looking to buy a kitten for my 6 year old ds, and was looking into buying a pedigree, like a Burmese, because they might be friendlier and affectionate and give ds the companionship he needs?

Obviously they cost a lot more money though - is it worth it? I use to keep non pedigree cats before ds, and I found that it was pot luck really as to what type of cat you'd get - some are naturally friendly, cuddly & relaxed and some are just more nervous and solitary.

I did have a Siamese cat when I was child, and although a great personality, was completely bonkers, and could not be toilet trained.

Well I am starting to panic. The owner told me at the time that the kittens were ready to pick up on the 12th (tomorrow). I told her I'd contact her nearer the time to let her know what time I'd be there. I don't have a phone number for her but have emailed her twice, yesterday and today, and she has not got back to me. I can not begin to tell you how excited DS is about getting the kitten tomorrow, I just wish she'd get back to me!

I really hope I haven't been conned.

Have you heard anything yet?

I'm going to get flamed here - but YES, Burmese in particular are incredibly social. They are also incredibly intelligent, incredibly loud and incredibly neurotic (as I think someone has already pointed out). They really are more doglike than catlike: they will play fetch, pull things, follow you round the house... Pretty interactive animals - be prepared for that.

Bengals are MASSIVE animals - and they are heavy and strong. Their spots become darker as their adult coat comes through. And they LOVE water - keep the toilet seat down.

Mine sleep about 18 hours a day. But the other 6 hours they will be running around going crazy, you need to tire them out before you go to bed as otherwise they'll be up all night. Try to have a set routine for them and make sure they get locked away overnight.

The first 6 months are absolutely key to socialise them - make sure you have lots of people handle the kitten, that it eats a variety of food, get their nails clipped regularly by you (saves on vets' fees), get him trained to show you his teeth (they are really prone to doing daft things to their teeth and it helps if they do this on command).

The other thing which is SO important if you have a pedigree cat is that it needs to be an indoor cat and you need lots of space. They get stolen and run over far too often - it's so sad.
