L2K - how old is your cat?

They are so funny and total gits when it comes to DP's!!! When we sit down for the evening DP sits one end of the sofa, mog sits at the other end and I end up in the middle....we are like the 3 stooges!!! They then eyeball each other....and mog tells him in cat talk to bugger off Im sure!!

Ginger mog is 12...asleep next to me now, but I know he is doing OK today although needs a good groom, apparently that is par for the course. I wrapped his pills in turkey from the deli counter today, very happy chap!!! When he wakes up I will do it but dont like to disturb him.

Do let me know how it goes this week I will be thinking of you.

xx

Hi FFF. My old Bucky-cat died almost two years ago from kidney failure. He'd had it for a while and we managed it, but then noticed he'd suddenly gotten much thinner ( and I thought he was thin to begin with). Then he started vomiting clear saliva/bubbly-type fluid, and finally lost the use of his legs. He dragged himself into the loo and laid by the tub (it was late August so maybe he wanted a cool spot?). The next morning I found him trying to drag himself into the hallway, and that was it, I knew the time had come to let him go. So we took him to the vet wrapped in his favourite blanket, and they placed an IV and sent him off to Rainbow Bridge while I was allowed to have him on my knee and stroke him.

(Sorry, need to have a little cry.)

Ok. That was in 2009. I knew he'd been failing but while he was able to eat and scramble into the couch and cuddle, it was ok. But the moment I knew he was suffering, trying to drag himself on legs that weren't working, it was time to let him go.

I'm so sorry for you and your little moggy. (((HUG)))

FourFortyFour · 13/03/2011 09:38

I am sorry for you all Sad.

I can't bare the thought of her struggling like that.

I am panicking about something else now. She curls up to sleep on the sofa for hours on end and then seems like her legs have gone to sleep and it appears like a while before she gets control of them to stand up properly and jump down. Is that normal? I am noticing every little thing at the moment.

Well she has refused to eat her breakfast and has only eaten a tiny bit of tea. Sad. She is normally really good at taking her medicine and wouldn't let me open her mouth for ages. I can't help thinking it is the beginning of the end SadSad.

Animals are just like people, when they get old they get stiff, and when they stay in the same position for a while they seize up (just like me actually Grin).

Worth phoning the vet for further advice?

Much sympathy to your beautiful old thing. Sad

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 08:07

She didn't eat her breakfast yesterday, only ate a small bit of tea and hasn't eaten her breakfast this morning either. I am going out to buy her some tinned tuna but am scared this is bad news Sad [stupid woman, it is a cat emoticon].

Oh goodness me I'm so sorrySad. Cats are such lovely lovely animals.

Making her comfortable and secure as you are doing will make her feel reassured. She sounds a most loved and treasured cat which is wonderful.

This is not a happy time in this topic atm it seems Sad

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 10:52

I have come home and she hasn't eaten. Sad

Do I give her the tinned tuna now and how much?

OP posts:

Are you ok FFF? Just wanted to send some mnetty support.

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 20:36

Thank you.

She is okay. Has got stuff to give her when she won't eat, has been given 2 injections and I have some stuff as she has arthritis too.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. We did with my lovely old cat (she was 21 when she died). You do know when the time is right. The vet came to the house and my puss was PTS. He gave her two injections, one to calm her. I stroked her when she had this, and she purred as she hadn't done for years. He waited a few minutes and then gave her the one to make her heart stop beating. It was the right thing to do. But so sad.

This morning she isn't even asking for food. Sad

Two injections MrsSchadenfreude? My old puss only had one. But she was well past her sell by date.

Hope you are OK FFF. Tis a horrible time.

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 11:54

We have managed to get her to eat some normal food with some powder mixed in. Both my girls are poorly and it is making me ill. I plan to sleep all day Sunday assuming both are well.

Can you get Brand's Chicken Essence (they used to give it to poorly babies in the olden days).

I had a very very sick kitten once for whom I diluted that stuff and gave it on a teaspoon fairly frequently. She recovered, eventually, though not entirely due to my ministrations, but the chicken essence was the only thing she would take, in minute quantities (ie. dipped her tongue in once or twice) at first, but it helped her when she took nothing else at all.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 14:18

She is meant to only eat a specific diet but I will have to see how she goes this week. She has eaten something today Smile.

Dear 44, my heart goes out to you. I came here to try and identify if there is severe pain in a cat when they have liver disease. I've gotten some useful tips. My Abby Girl 17 and three months. I feel like I am losing my child. I can hardly be anyway and I begin to cry. The vet gave me some supplements to keep her going but its temporary. I don'any want to buy her more time if she's ready to check out. She has all the symptoms of this disease. Today she doesn't seem to want to eat. She urinates frequently all over the house sometimes making it to her box. I have loved her for so long it hurts to have to make that decision. My sweet husband is so patient with me, I am really grateful. This forum has been helpful. I anticipate I will have to put her down his week. I am miserable either way you slice it. Thanks, all....

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/05/2015 21:55

Oh no, it's just the worst time isn't it?. So hard to let go of them.

Katnisnevergreen · 12/06/2015 12:55

My darling bit died this week, following a battle with suspected lymphoma- ever growing lumps in his stomach and very fast weight loss. He just went to sleep and didn't wake up. I'm now guilt ridden that I should have had him PTs so at least I was there with him, but he kept have brighter days and duller days. I don't know if I could have made the decision either. It's selfish but I kept hoping he would get better ...

something2say · 13/06/2015 21:54

I'm so sorry Kat. Its so sad isn't it.

I have an old grey boy, gorgeous bit of cuddley baby. Very wobbly legs, needs steps to the bed, hardly any teeth. Losing weight. Will be posting here soon I think, but not yet I hope.

Meanwhile, rip to your previous bundle x and hugs to you x

Randombird78 · 27/03/2018 13:27

I'm having trouble making the decision right now. My lovely cat of 15 years has cancer in the liver and the vet has said no more treatment. He sleeps all day only making it up to get enough to drink and eat and then he sleeps again. My kids are struggling with it the most only having a friend pass recently. Oh what to do?
