what "treats" do you give your cat?

We have recently got two rescue cats, they are eating well - dry and wet food. But I'm not sure what titbits to give them - they had some roast chicken which they loved, but is it ok to give them ham, cheese or anything like that? There is so much salt in that kind of thing that I'm not sure if it's ok. My last experience of cats was when I was a girl myself (about a 100 years ago when people didn't seem to worry about stuff like salt and additives Smile)

Nothing. She never does anything that merits a treat.

DooinMeCleanin · 07/02/2011 14:39

My cat loves ham, he is not keen on blocks of cheese but likes cheese sauce. He does not like Whiskas Kitbits at all. He will look at you like you are trying to poison him if you offer him one.

Raw chicken wings are his favourite.

A little of most things is unlikely to hurt them. Ours occasionally have treats anything from a small bit of salt and vinegar crisp to licking the bits off a chopping board after dh carved meat on it or even a bit of breadstick with hummus dip on it.Whatever you do do not feed them from the table, our rescue cats obviously were before we had them and if you looked away they would jump up and steal food off our plates or on our forks. We try not to have any routine about it so they don't expect it either. Enjoy your cats and you can use treats as a good reward for coming to you.

Good advice Florin! One of ours is quite small so she can't jump up but the other is a bit of a terror for jumping onto the kitchen surfaces, and we try to feed them just before eating our own food so that they don't pester us too much Smile. Good point about making sure they don't get into the habit of "expecting" a treat.

My cat's main treat is being allowed to remain in the house even though she keeps bringing in half dead presents and generally annoying the crap out of me Grin.

Seriously though, she loves it when she gets a tin of sardines in spring water, although I wish she wouldn't leave the lovingly licked clean spines all over the kitchen floor.

pinkhebe · 07/02/2011 14:53

we also treat with bits of tuna

LittleMissNorty · 07/02/2011 14:53

mine loves grated cheese, some left over gravy. Chopping board is a good one - we do that as well!

ShatnersBassoon · 07/02/2011 14:55

You let your cats lick the chopping board used for people food? Confused

BendyBob · 07/02/2011 14:56

Ours love cheese. And also cat milk and some roast meat if we've had it on Sunday for our dinner. And fresh fish lightly cooked. God mine are spoiled sometimesHmm.

Careful not too many treats though (hark at me after that list!Grin).

TheVisitor · 07/02/2011 14:58

They'll get bacon rind or fat from meat, but otherwise I don't give them treats at all.

purpleknittingmum · 07/02/2011 20:32

Our cat gets a bit of ham every now and then, or cheese

I try and give him those sort of healthy snacks, ones that help with furballs and ones for teeth. He loves the furballs ones but not too keen on the others!

Cicatrice · 07/02/2011 20:36

Dreamies - he loves them. Not fussed about tuna or chicken or anything else. They really float his boat. He is lurking on my shoulder trying to convince me to give him some as I type.

SilveryMoon · 07/02/2011 20:42

My cat (was cats, but one died on saturday Sad) has a tin of sheeba wet food on a friday.
They otherwise have dry food.
That's about it really, other than I allow them to lick the plates after dinner Blush

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 20:45

I have 2 rescue cats neither eats anything but iams.

Tried tuna when run out- 1 refused 1 had a nibble only

I licks cream

I don't really think they need treats or appreciate them

LifeInTheSlowLane · 08/02/2011 16:53

SilveryMoon, sorry for your loss Sad
Mine were eating really well but have now gone off kitekat. I tried Sheeba and they much preferred it. Don't want them to become fussy things though so they'll have to finish off the tins in the cupboard before I change brand!!

my two 9mth old kitties sometimes get given a bit of tuna or salmon and the left overs of a roast dinner (if theres any left once we have all eaten Grin)

CaveMum · 12/02/2011 23:35

Mine is another cheese freak - grated only, and only one or two slivers at a time.

She also loves the Whiska's Salmon Stick treats - honestly you'd think she was a drug addict the way she reacts when the packet comes out! She only gets half a stick at a time and no more than 1 whole stick in a week. As has been said, a treat should be unexpected and out of the routine.

EllieDawn · 14/02/2011 17:26

Mine goes mad for the salmon sticks as well, and those whiskas treats that have softer stuff in the middle.

scaryteacher · 16/02/2011 09:25

Bits off the chicken and tinned tuna (in oil or spring water).

Lizcat · 17/02/2011 08:56

A really bad vet lady here - do what I say not what I do Blush.
My beautiful moggy girl has cheese everynight and enjoys cheesy wotsits.
My arogant posh boy gets the left over milk in the cereal bowls every morning.
If there is left over fish or meat I think they would enjoy they get that.
I do drop there actual food if they have treats so they are both only 4.5Kg in weight which is healthy for both of them.

LifeInTheSlowLane · 17/02/2011 12:56

Cheesy wotsits Shock

yesterday, I was clearing up after the DCs' tea and got distracted. Went back into the kitchen to find one of the cats on the kitchen counter licking custard out of the bowl! She had her face right in and custard all over her fur, so cute I couldn't be cross Smile

She loves her odd treat of cheesy wotsits. On the days when she refuses to take her tablet in cheese I stuff it in cheesy wotsit and it's gone in seconds.
