stop and scratch the floor (well tries to it's pretty solid lino(?) stuff Grin) around his bowl when he's eating?

He does it every time he eats without fail. And sometimes walks back just to have a good paw around it......

'tis most bizarre - just wondered if there was any particular reason for it - or is he just slightly bonkers Grin

my cat does this too, I always thought it was because she was cleaning her paws before eating Grin

Dunoon · 31/01/2011 10:05

I wondered if it was a throw back to days when they would bury leftovers for later.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 31/01/2011 10:07

oh it could be. He always does it after he's had a little bit and is having a short break.

He's eating better now anyhow - seems to have really picked up since the DS's came back from exH's Grin

Can anyone tell me why one of my cats runs into the kitchen, opens cupboard with paw, looks into cupboard and then wanders off?

Is it a throw back to the days when cats had to check how much cat food was left in cupboard? Or if baking trays are ok?
Grin

Baroque - one of our cats does this too, I have been wondering why! I know from your other threads that you adopted yours just before we got our two. It is very entertaining watching their funny ways isn't it.

Ours are indoors still as we have only had them two weeks. The youngest is fascinated by the TV. He'll jump up on the telly table and sit right in front of it, then look round the back as if to say "how did those people get in there?" Grin

CrispyCakeHead · 03/02/2011 13:39

Our cat only ever did this with food he didn't like and I'm sure I read in Catwatching by Desmond Morris that it's them trying to bury it! Maybe he's trying to tell you something?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 13:40

well I don't know Crispy - as he's eating really well now (yipee!!!) (dry and wet) - but still does the scratching the floor business in between wofling it down Grin

lol LifeInTheSlowLane - Jambo was sat on my toy box (next to the TV) this morning staring intently, with head cocked sideways at Bits N Bobs. He watched almost the whole thing without moving an inch, and then it finished and he jumped off the toy box and disappeared off upstairs Confused

I just googled and apparently he is following a natural instinct to bury it for later so other predators/scavengers don't get it. Maybe he thinks you'll eat it if he doesn't? Grin

Cats are odd beasties though; mine once watched a whole hour of a nature programme about releasing some lynx into the wild once.....she lay on the sofa, chin on crossed paws and didn't move once. As soon as it was over she wandered off!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 22:31

ooo - cool thanks for that Crispy Grin

Not much chance of me eating it........but maybe he's worried about the DS's swiping it when he's not looking hehe.

They certainly are funny things - mines buggered off and abandoned me again (he tends to surface from his favourite snoozing spots when the boys get home from school) - no doubt will surface to play at 2/3am in the morning as per usual Grin

I used to eat Kit-e-Kat when I was little; I liked crunching on the bones that were in it Blush

now i just eat tinned sardines instead!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 04/02/2011 10:37

I used to eat our dogs chocolate (doggy ones) and biscuit treats Blush - and sleep in her basket (the daft thing would just let me too)

I'm certain it's the burying food for later thing now. Yesterday morning I'd left a plastic bag on the floor close to his bowl. I noticed after he'd finished eating he moved the bag over the food, he did the same last night, and again this morning.

Well my Ginger Moron gets in his litter tray, spins round and round, does his wee, gets out of the tray and only then does he dig at the floor in a random attempt to bury the wee in the tray. If you dont stop him, he can go on for ages like this.

JeelyPiece · 08/02/2011 17:14

I like to think mine is tidying up afterwards when he does this round his food bowl. Unfortunately when he has muddy feet it doesn't really have that effect and the floor needs mopped. He even paws at the legs of the table the bowl is under, quite a thorough job.
