Help! Cat driving me demented!

I have the most gorgeous ginger girl who is nearly 12 - had her since a tiny kitten. She is showing her age, completely deaf, skinny as a rake and has a slow growing tumour in the nasal passages (under vet - not operable).

Long story short she sits by the door wailing to go out - really LOUD cos she can't hear herself, so let her out, 2 secs later shes in the window wailing to come back in. Comes back in, walks round kitchen then wails to go out again. This will go on for hours and quite frankly its starting to drive me up the walls cos all I seem to do is let her in and out. Any ideas on how to get her to settle or what might be her problem? Thanks

hmmm sounds like she might be going a bit senile actually. Could she have thyroid problems (skinny as a rake...?), which I think can also cause strange behaviour.

Peggotty - shes due for a check up with the vets - goes every couple of mths to check on tumour so will ask re thyroid. Hope shes not going senile cos my old dog is already there! I hate my animals getting old :(

Have you checked she is urinating okay. Often older cats get urinary crystals and feel the urge but then can't go.

Catflap?

farming, it's awful when they start ageing, I know. I have an almost 14 year old boy cat who's also completely deaf and has polyps growing in his ear so constantly on antibiotics as his ear just weeps pus otherwise. He does a lot of (loud!!) meowing because he wants tastier food than his usual dried stuff. It just sounds like your girl is very restless for some reason, which could be related to her illness possibly or if she's got any thyroid problems it just rings a bell to me that it can cause behavioural changes as well....Hopefully it's something simple. Like whomoved says it's worth checking if she's urinating ok as well.

Will pop her up the vets on Monday and get her checked out - just getting to the point that I'm nearly scared to take her there in case I get told the worst news - but I also don't want her to be suffering needlessly.

Chocolate - can't have a catflap cos i need listed building permission. Also not keen on finding "presents" in the house because the moggies want to show off what they have caught! Grin

Thanks for the replies x

farming4 - we are listed too use the back door Wink

Good luck btw, lost my two forever cats last year. We've got a new one, but while lovely, it's not the same as one you've had for years and years.
