best flea treatment

a while ago, a poster who is a vet recommended a flea treatment and I've forgotten the name of it. I'm about to use my last Frontline and I'd love to be reminded of the name of this other treatment.
I seem to remember it being fairly new, about three years old I think.

TIA

Advocate maybe?

mckenzie · 14/01/2011 19:20

thanks Lizcat - that sounds like the one.

Stronghold is good as it also acts as a wormer too. It's the one the RSPCA prescribe.

pinkhebe · 15/01/2011 12:21

we use advocate, it's on prescription from your vets

Don't forget to treat the carpets as the eggs and larvae will hide there for quite a long while.

If you can keep the cat out, Borax on the carpet, left for half an hour or loner if you can, then hoovered up thoroughly should do. Remember under and behind the sofa and along the skirting board where the critters hide should do it.

Thanks for the replies.
The cats don't have fleas jodevizes, at least not to the best of my knowledge. I use a monthly treatment to stop them from getting them and now that my stocks of Frontline have finished, I want to use something that is considered to be better.

As an aside - are there any effective over-the-counter worm tablets you can recommend please?

We are quite a trek to the nearest vet and cat hates it/gets very stressed.

theredhen · 27/01/2011 23:31

Advocate acts as a wormer for most worms too, you only need to give a seperate wormer every 6 months or so.

If you can find a Vet that does it.......getting more difficult though, as they've cottoned on to the fact that you don't go back spending a fortune on further treatmentsHmm

but theres a jab, called PROGRAM.....it sterilizes the fleas on the first bite, so if they pick 1 up it never turns into an infestation, its brilliant stuff....

had my old Cat done with it & we were told then it is a once in a lifetime jab, ..she was still flea free when she died years later, & thats knowing after an earlier big flea problem, we will have dormant ones in floorboards etc

Had our New Cat done when she arrived, & despite the Vet now saying its a 6 month repeat jabHmm over a year later she is still flea free......it did cost about £40, but it saves so much more in the long run, & will do less harm all round than frequent usual treatments.....our Kitten will be getting his jab too when he's old enough

Advocate is much better than frontline because it worms them too, no need for worming tablets! Plus it gets rid of ticks and a lot of other nasties I hadn't even heard of before!

beautifulgirls · 28/01/2011 16:05

Rockin the program injections have always been 6 monthly so I don't know why you were told it would last a lifetime.

Stronghold is probably a bit cheaper than advocate, but other than that for cats not much to choose between them for efficiency at flea control. Both also treat roundworms, but you need a tapewormer at least every 6 months in addition. Something like drontal cat or milbemax.

rockinhippy · 28/01/2011 17:01

in that case, me neither Confused,

but our vet is always very much on the ball with sending out "reminders" & we never did received 1 for our old Cat & the jab lasted her the next 3 years or so....... we took in our friends Kittens for a week after she died, & they DID get fleas (which we treat of course), so bar DDTing the place, there is still a potential problem here

Our new Cat had her program jab straight away, & we did get 6 monthly reminders, but I figured based on our old Cat, I would "wait & see" ......she is STILL very much flea free......

so though I can't yet say it IS a lifetime jab, it certainly isn't needed every 6 months

Hi all, I use Advantage and I buy it from eBay USA as it's half the price of vets. Thi stuff is amazing!!
Years we persisted with frontline that never worked with our flea bag moggy but we thought it was the best on the Market. A friend in France told me about advantage as frontline never worked for her farm Cats either.

Barney is a completely different might now and we don't fret about having fleas in the house especially with little toddler in the house.

Wish I'd found it years ago.

Get your wormiing tablets from eBay too... Very cheap and vet quality.
