Why is my cat drinking so much water each day? More than she used too.

Her kidneys are failing, wmmc Sad.

I could use some chocolate.

:(
my mums cat lived another few years after being 1`st diagonised...lived to be 19

whomovedmychocolate · 18/01/2011 19:54

Oh no- I missed that bit - I'm sorry :(

That's a real bugger.

But she may still be around a while longer if it's not too bad.

One of mine was diagnosed with a brain tumour three years before she died. She didn't die of the brain tumour. Frankly we were all surprised to find she had a brain as she thought she was a saucepan Wink

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 20:01

She already has an illness and now this. It isn't fair. I need my cat. I know she is only a cat but we have been through some shit together and have a really tough few months ahead, and her dying would devastate me.

SecretNutellaFix · 18/01/2011 20:02

Fab- she is old, but there's no reason she can't have a happy life with the right treatment.

It's hard to take when pets are ill- they are so much a part of your life.

Hope everything goes ok.

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 20:05

Thank you.

I feel stupid but then I cried when the hamster died. But my cat is my baby. She is 16 and 41/2 months, and I have had her since she was 5 weeks old. We have had 6 house moves together too.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 18/01/2011 20:06

I know how you feel. Both of mine had been with me for 16 years and they both died last year within a month :(

We got a rescue cat after five months without a cat and aside from savaging me this week, it's all worked out. They don't live forever unfortunately, and you've done all the right things and they will know that. From their PoV they are very old and tired but they know they've been loved from day one by you and they are relying on you to do what's best for them. :)

Ingles2 · 18/01/2011 20:08

awww Fab Sad
This isn't the end yet sweetie, so be positive. She is very old and yes, things will start to go wrong, but you've caught this early and it doesn't sound terrible.
Electrolites are salts and things aren't they? the vet will just want to put her on a very expensive diet probably...
Chin up.

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 20:09

SadSad.

Will it be obvious if she is in pain? What actually happens with kidney failure?

OP posts:
Ingles2 · 18/01/2011 20:11

hey you, stop jumping the gun....her kidneys are failing a bit you said. not completely...
With medication I'm sure there's life in the old girl yet.

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 20:17

I was so expecting him to say there was no problem. He sounded like he really didn't want to tell me. When he said her kidneys were starting to fail I felt like I had stopped breathing Blush.

OP posts:
Ingles2 · 18/01/2011 20:21

I know,... I'm always heartbroken when there are problems with my cat. It's to be expected at 16 unfortunately.
Apart from the drinking , does she seem ok in herself?

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 20:24

She sleeps a lot. I do think sometimes she is looking her age and then other times it is like she is a kitten.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 18/01/2011 20:24

Yes you can generally tell, they sleep a lot, lose interest in things, just mope about. Sometimes they go off and die on their own I'm afraid. I took the very hard choice to have Felix euthanised because he was just looking miserable and had clearly had enough. He probably would have gone on another two weeks before he died otherwise, but he had no quality of life left :(

Ingles2 · 18/01/2011 20:30

well it might not be a that point just yet,... no point in worrying until you hear what the vet has to say.
anyway though Smile

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 20:56

I will keep a very close eye on her.

Thanks for the hug. Just had a mini row disagreement with DH so in need of a hug.

OP posts:
IAmReallyFabNow · 19/01/2011 11:00

If the worst was to happen what is better for FabCat, to have the vet do the necessary of for her to go in her sleep?

And will she be in pain if her kidneys are failing?

OP posts:
IAmReallyFabNow · 20/01/2011 08:08

I am dreading today Sad. Poor thing seems to know.

OP posts:
SecretNutellaFix · 20/01/2011 08:10

Is she still interested in stuff? Drinking? happy enough in herself?

IAmReallyFabNow · 20/01/2011 10:52

We are back. She was so good but cried when I called her to have a new tablet Sad.

She seems to be fine in herself and the vet said we have caught it early so might get 2 more years with her Grin but also Sad that there seems to be a limit on how long she will live.

I have to take her back in 4 weeks for more blood tests and an injection and she will be weighed as well as she has lost weight.

I have new food for her and a bill for £66 but I don't care. I just want her with me.

OP posts:
Ingles2 · 20/01/2011 22:42

Smile See!
I Told you Fab.. and I'm glad to hear she has a couple of years in her yet.
It's also good to have warning of what lies ahead. It gives you time to prepare yourself.
Anyway, Give her a big cuddle from me x

IAmReallyFabNow · 21/01/2011 10:55

Thank you.

TBH I don't really know what to expect but she is being very spoilt. Luckily I live on cheese and salad leaves so my food budget can go on her Grin.

OP posts:
IAmReallyFabNow · 21/01/2011 17:51

I might have known she would like this new food as it is ££££ HmmGrin.
