weaning a kitten...

DH is a firefighter and his watch found 4 stray kittens in a derelict, burning building-they have all been rehomed and we decided to have one.

As she was a stray, we couldn't be sure of her age but vet thinks she was around 3-4 weeks when we got her, and is now around 6-7 weeks.

She is on kitten formula, which we bottle fed her with at first, but she kept destroying the teats Shock so we tried it in a dish and she laps it up. She has this 3 times a day now.

She also has the dry kitten food, which we were advised to soak to soften it so it goes a bit mushy. She seems okay with eating this and has grown a lot since we first got her.

So (sorry for being long winded) should we now be making her food a bit more dry? And cutting down on the formula?

Also she is pretty bonkers Grin love her to bits but I'm sure she thinks she's a lion cub the way she prowls and pounces! She leaps at our legs and climbs up, and chases anything that moves! Is this normal boisterous kitten behaviour or is it because she was stray? She's not one to sit on your lap and get stroked.

It sounds like normal kitten behaviour to me. Smile
I wouldn't try to make her food any drier yet. She would still be with her mother at that age if the situation was different, so leave it as it is for a couple more weeks.

Our old cat, when he was a kitten used to climb up the back of my husband whilst he was doing the washing up, until he got too heavy for his claws to cling on!

Thank you Smile I will keep her food mushy for now.

Glad it's not only Bella who likes to fly up people's legs!

Luckily my two kitties are too heavy now (they are 7mths)

But I used to have one climbing up each leg

Ouch! I sort of wish we'd taken two of the kittens now so that she would have a playmate- she's very boisterous! We have one of those mice on a string which she loves, she stalks it around the room Grin.

My two are sisters and we had to take one before the other for a few days (long story but the one left behind was not eating properly)

It was much easier when the 2nd kitty joined us Grin

Although they do have their spats and now have to have separate litter trays, bowls etc Hmm
