Shall I call the vet?

My poor old puss is giving up the ghost. She is nearly 21, and has gone downhill in the last few weeks. She is sleeping most of the day on her chair. Will she just go quietly or should I have her put to sleep? She is very ill, but does not seem to notice. I stood on her paw a couple of days ago and she didn't even flinch. Have read through other threads, and I know it is the last act of kindness we can do for them, but I can't bear to think of the vet putting a needle in her, there is nowhere to put it, she is just skin and bone. I keep thinking, just one more day. This is her life, and the only one she has got left. Every morning I wake up hoping she will have gone to sleep in the night. But she still clings on bless her. This morning I was convinced she would be dead, and then I felt guilty for not having been with her.

Bloody animals!

Oh coat :(

So sorry you are going through this, such a horrible time. Hope she goes peacefully. :(

Will be keeping you and your family in my thoughts. x

I'm so sorry, I was in exactly the same situation with my cat a couple of years ago. Everyday I would wish he had passed away peacefully too. One day I was just sat there and knew it was time to call them, they came to my house and although it was very sad, he was peaceful and sitting on my knee. It still makes me cry now thinking about it but I know it was the right thing.

Anyway, my point is you have chosen exactly the right time I'm sure, not too soon and not too late. She'll know you're with her and how loved she is and that you're helping her in the way that she needs. Thinking of you, I know how hard it is and so many people have been through it and will understand too xxxx

morning coat - how are things your end today. Thinking of you x

Hi All. You are all so lovely. Spent the evening with her. When I sat down she woke up and crawled across the table to sit on my knee Sad. She then went and weed behind the television (hurrah - more cleaning) and then collapsed again. Her back end has gone. I carried her back to her chair and left her alone about 11pm, not expecting to see her alive again. I got up at 2am and she was still with us, and checked her again at 6am before going to do the horse. She is still bloody clinging on. Vet coming at 12.30 and to be honest it can't come soon enough. Every time I walk into the room she looks at me and meows. I cannot imagine what is keeping her alive, apart from sheer determination. Thanks for all your lovely thoughts. Hope I don't make too much of an exhibition of myself in front of the vet....

My poor old puss was exactly the same at 21. The vet came to the house to put her to sleep as well. Much better than the trauma of a car journey. She purred when the injection went in - the first time she had purred for weeks. It was as if she knew, and was ready to go. Sad

coatgate · 25/11/2010 09:03

Sad Mine hasn't purred for a couple of weeks either.

Sad keep us informed and will be thinking of you at lunchtime x

Part of a vet's job is to "look after" humans as well as their pets in situations like this and god knows he/she will have sadly seen tears and distress before.

Mine certainly have - me. Please don't add to your distress by worrying what the vet will think. It's the people who don't shed a tear and who don't care that they'll think badly of.

Thinking of you and of Puss.

Hi All - She has gone. She is lying on the window seat, where she used to love to sit and watch the garden and the trees and the hills beyond, waiting for DD to come home from school. DH not looking forward to digging in the frozen soil. Very sad. Sad [blub]

Sorry, its very hard when time comes, I've kept a piece of my cats fur to remember the feel of her, just a little snip. My mum said she wished she'd done same with my dad's hair when he died Sad but didn't occur to her at the time.

booyhoo · 25/11/2010 13:33
