our house smells of 'cat'

We recetnyl adopted two cats from the RSPCA - although wehave a cta flap we still have two litter trays.

We've just been away for a week and our neighbour has been coming in a few times a day to feed and clean the trays and give them some TLC.

When we came home last night, there was a really unpleasant smell of cat as we came through the front door. Not urine or poo smell, just cat.

Is this normal? Just because the house has been all shut up for a week? Or is it because we have carpet in the lounge maybe (the place where they spend most of their time?

TIA

Sorry, but it probably always smells like that - it is just that your noses adjust to the smell whilst you are there.

My house smells moofy/damp as you come in the front porch... I am sure it always smells moofy but I only smell it when I come back from a few days away. Even when my husband and kids are at home, so it is not a 'shut-up-house' smell.

but that means that it smells horrible to everyone else who comes through the front door!!!

You get used to the smell so stop smelling it but just because you have cats doesn't mean your house has to smell bad. Keeping your cats clean is the best way for you to keep your house smelling fresher. Back when my girls were outdoor cats I used to very occasionally bath them to keep them smelling clean which was the necessary kick up the bum telling them to keep themselves clean or else. You can't completely irradiate the smell though only cover it up.

Seriously though, if its just a faint cat smell I wouldn't worry too much about it. Nobody will think anything of it. I've known people who had cats and didn't keep them well and their house smelt really foul of cat pee which just shows that they're just unfit to look after animals. If it is just "cat" you are smelling there is little you can do about it.

thanks 1Catherine1.

I get up close to the cats all the time for cuddles etc and they themselves don't smell unpleasant at all. They don't have any smell really.

My sister came over yesterday - I'm going to ask her if she noticed anything when she came in. She doesn't particularly like cats so I think she'll tell me if there was a smell Smile

My house smells less since I switched cat litter, have dogs as well so I think I'm immune to the smells. DH has commented on the 'lack' of cat odour where the ltter tray is.

thanks walkersmum. Perhaps I'll try switching too when this bag has finished.
