Any ideas how to keep a cat safe re collar

One of my cats keeps losing their collars. Due to their love of climbing trees, I am presuming that he keeps getting stuck in trees, and therefore the release function is doing it's job.

For that reason I don't want to put a non-release collar on otherwise he'll get strangled somewhere.

What do others do? Although he's chipped I would like to have contact details on it, to ensure swift reunited, and help to prevent someone taking him in mistaking him for a stray. Also as the afternoons are now dark I would like to put some sort of light on him, like a flashing collar but feel I could be replacing this on a daily basis.

Any tips gratefully received.

You can get reflective collars for cats.

I have a cat who climbs a lot, and sometimes she goes for ages before losing a collar, sometimes just a fortnight. She also is microchipped, but I just buy a selection of cheap collars with safety buckles, and some of those little metal tubes with a piece of paper inside. You can get these for about 50p in Wilkinson (the tubes). I just write on the cats name and our surname, and our phone number.

I have had collars put through the letterbox from neighbours who found lost collars in their gardens, and also someone rang to find out where to return one! I have also found a couple myself hidden in flower beds.

Oh great I'll look for the reflective collars.

Thanks for the tip re Wilkinson, I'll go and find those. I've been buying them at £1.40 a go, not a lot initially but the cost is beginning to add up!!!

We have the same problem with one of our cats. I bought them two collars each when they started to go outside - within ten days one had lost both his collars. His brother lost a collar about three months later, but was good enough to do so in the driveway, so we got it straight back. I picked up a further collar a few weeks ago for the other one, put his brother's spare tag on it (which was weird, as it had the WRONG NAME in big letters) and he lost it in less than a week.

So, Wilkinson for ID tubes, do they have cheap collars as well? Mine have had reflective safety buckled ones to date, I'm immoveable on the safety buckles after seeing what my friend's poor cat did to herself with a normal one, but I've only found fairly expensive ones so far.

I flashing collar???

I've heard of BFBs, but PC's?

Reflective collar, and if you are really worried, keep him in over night. That's when my cats get scratched noses/ears/chased by foxes.

(Although the fox thing could just be my imagination)

I'll come clean - my main incentive for getting my cat visible is not to protect the cat, but it's the fact that I have this real fear of him running into the road, car not seeing him until last minute, swerving to avoid him, and crashing. I would then feel incredible guilt that my animal had caused an RTA.

So not PC Grin
