Bastard fleas!!!

My damn beloved cats have caused a flea outbreak in my home - again! Frontlined them, hoovered, sprayed the house but DD and I are still finding them. DH is oblivious and just keeps behaving as if I'm being unreasonable when I tell him he's got to help me hoover or clear the clutter off the floor etc (I'm 29 weeks pg so I can't manage lots of lifting etc). Angry

He told me that he's been told that frontline isn't effective as the fleas have learned to tolerate it - anybody else heard this?

We're finding this with our two.

Next payday, they are going up the vet for Advocate.

You have my sympathies... a couple of years ago we had a MAJOR infestation, carpet literally crawling with bastard fleas. Hoovering and drops on the cat won't do it alone if the fleas are already ensconced in your house.

Frontline Combo is much more effective than normal Frontline, it makes your cat's blood poisonous to adult fleas and their poo poisonous to the larvae (I think, was trying hard not to vom when vet explained it to me)

Get your DH to take all curtains, cushions, rugs, bedlinen etc to the laundrette and wash hot & tumble dry. We washed everything we owned (literally) and although my curtains are now three inches too short we only lost a couple of cushions (exploded in dryer)

Things you really can't wash need to be sprayed with topical flea killer (I sprayed and sealed in plastic bags for 24hrs to make sure)

Get DH to smoke-bomb the entire house. Smoke bomb again a couple of weeks later.

A lot of the chemicals etc are probably not the sort of thing you want to be inhaling whilst pg so you need to get him off his arse. A fortnight of manic effort should see the problem solved though.

I now spray cat's bed & sofa every month just to be on the safe side as well as flea drops... once bitten twice shy (arf arf)

Good luck it's pretty grim but you'll get there!

Stronghold much, much better than Frontline imo - one of our former cats was a complete fleabag until we used Stronghold

Advocate is even better than frontline....

Ahh have just started another thread for the exact same reason!!! Bloody mutent fleas - makes me want to itch just thinking about it!!! Okay off to the vets for me......!!!

girliefriend · 17/11/2010 19:46

How expensive is Advocate? Just so I can prepare myself!!!

pinkhebe · 23/11/2010 16:23

about £30. we changed from frontline and one week later have got no fleas that I know of. it only takes a couple of hours to kill them I think, instead of 24.

I used to use frontline on my two cats but the little toads still had fleas. DH got to the point of having a breakdown every time he found a flea (which was often) so he called the local vets wanting to know what the most effective course of action was.

Next thing I know he had toted the cats off to the vet for injections called PROGRAM. The injections last 6 months and work by making the fleas infertile so they never become a problem. I think it was about 50 quid for each cat, so not cheap, but I haven't seen a flea since and DH has stopped twitching every time one of the cats has a scratch, so I think it was worth it.
