I think my cat might die

and I'm absoloutly devestated. Also just told ds that his cat might not be coming home and now he too is a bawling mess.

He's got a blocked bladder and is being operated on now. His kidneys are compromised too so it doesn't look good :(

Can't believe that he was fine yesterday and at death's door this morning.

Any news?

moragsoverhereplease · 16/10/2010 17:05

Oh no ((hugs)) Its awful how they can deteriorate so quickly like that. Hope he pulls through.

phipps · 16/10/2010 17:05

Oh no Sad. Have you had any news?

PandaNot · 16/10/2010 22:16

Thanks for the kind thoughts. He's made it through the operation but is still very ill. I think now they've just got to wait and see if his kidney function gets better. Had a phonecall from th vet at about 8 to say he was still looking a bit shell-shocked but seemed to be recovering well enough from the anaesthetic. His brother is wandering around looking for him. :(

To really make my day, my 2 year old decided to fall off her scooter and break her ankle too! I haven't checked my lottery numbers yet but I'm hoping for better news...

Oh, no, poor DD! :(

Best wishes to both patients, and I didn't buy a lottery ticket for tonight so it's all yours...

whomovedmychocolate · 16/10/2010 22:44

Is it urinary crystals. My old boy (now sadly dead) had them, but recovered well and survived another few years (on extremely expensive medical biscuits Hmm)

Good luck to you all :(

PandaNot · 16/10/2010 22:46

It is urinary crystals, he was just completely blocked up apparently. It's the kidneys that seem to be most concerning now. It would be (somehow) easier if he were an old boy but he's not even 2 yet so I'm not quite prepared for him to die just yet. :(

If he's two he's got every chance of recovering. You need to know that the biscuits he will be put on are much cheaper if you buy them online - e.g £60 a sack from the vets and £20 online! Hmm

PandaNot · 17/10/2010 15:04

Ooh that is a lot cheaper - thanks for that!

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 17/10/2010 17:08

Bestpet.co.uk - sells them but just google the specific biscuits you want as they are sold widely online. It's well worth getting the very large sacks as they keep for up to six months.

Oh and they taste bad. Your cat will object strongly to being fed them - but it will keep him alive so pay no heed and do not go back to the canned gubbins (which smells worse).

bamboobutton · 17/10/2010 17:21

my freddy had this. my excellent vet, who i would trust with my own life, said those special diet biscuits are not necessary, you just need to feed him tinned food and make sure that he has plenty of water.

it is feeding cats dry food that causes it.

freddy lived for a few years and would've gone longer if he hadn't been run overSad

whomovedmychocolate · 17/10/2010 17:53

I was told feeding cats dry biscuits caused it Confused

I think actually it's generally that cats are meant to live on catfood but mice etc. My new cat has a 70% caught diet for example.

But the biscuits do dissolve the crystals apparently.

bamboobutton · 17/10/2010 18:02

i wouldn't know WMMC, we just did what the vet told us, he said stuff about natural diet etc.

i've moved around alot and had a couple of different vets and i think that some vets are in the pocket of these cat food producers as all of them, except my trusty old vet, had bags and bags of rip off cat foods on display. my vet only has stuff like flea treatment and wormers behind reception.

i love my vet.

whomovedmychocolate · 17/10/2010 18:09

Which is why I would not buy the food from the vet but buy it online. We tried a few actually - but definitely wet food is not a complete food for a cat.

It's best not to think about it but your average cat does a lot of 'supplementing' his diet when you aren't looking - or in our case - while you are looking (bastard!) Hmm

I know Felix never had a recurrence of the crystals while he was on the food and Alley-cat stopped showing symptoms on them.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 17/10/2010 18:26

Our cat had this - we didn't think he would pull trhough but he's fine.

The vet told us not to buy special food but to add water to wet food so it is very graveyish. Touch wood, he has been fine ever since.

PandaNot · 17/10/2010 19:29

Thanks for the advice everyone. He seems to be doing well, vet is pleased with him, although he's still catheterised(sp?) and very inflamed and still bleeding apparently. :(

I've been trying to do some research on the diet side of this and it seems that there is loads of conflicting advice Confused. Guess I'll have to wait and see what my vet says.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 17/10/2010 20:06

It's normal for the cat to be catheterised for at least 24 hours post surgery - and if he's had kidney damage some bleeding is also normal. But he's a young cat, he has that on his side :)

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 17/10/2010 20:09

Glad he's doing OK, but can't add anything to the diet conversation. How's DD?

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 17/10/2010 20:37

Glad he is doing OK. Hope you have more good news tomorrow.

beautifulgirls · 17/10/2010 21:54

take a look here

PandaNot · 18/10/2010 18:09

Good news is he's still doing well. I've been to see him and he was very pleased to see me, purring away as usual! Still catheterised but they're going to try taking that out tomorrow morning and provided everything still seems ok, he might come home tomorrow night! They're still concerned about his kidneys but need to wait until everything has settled down before deciding if it's a major problem.

DD ok too, hobbling about and in less pain which is good.

OP posts:
aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 18/10/2010 18:56

Glad to hear that things are looking better.

PandaNot · 19/10/2010 20:19

Well he's home and happily peeing everywhere! Making good progress which I hope will continue. Bleeding continuing though, although the vet didn't seem too concerned about that Confused
