Advocat versus Frontline

A new vet that I saw today says the he thinks Frontline is really not worth using - he reckons Advocate is by far the more effective, umbrella type product to use. He suggests that because Frontline has been around for so long the fleas might have got used to the product whereas Advocate has only been around for 3 years it's a much better product and does what it says on the tin, and then some.

Any thoughts please before I do my next dose?

TIA

Speaking from my experience in practice I am seeing more cases where flea infestations are not being sorted out by Frontline and whilst the manufacturer will deny resistance it seems a lot of people are voting with their feet and changing to other products. The cynical however will say that vets are telling you this as you can now buy frontline without a prescription so the vets are losing money - true, but I honestly believe what I see with my own eyes too and use Advocate now on my own pets - I can buy either product at the same sort of prices.

Advocate is a good product in my opinion and so far seems to be doing the job. It also covers the roundworm treatments (but you need a tapewormer separately) unlike Frontline.

thanks very much beautifulgirls. I didn't realise Advocate was only available on prescription. Never mind, I'm sure it will be worth it! These flipping cats are costing me a fortune. Whose idea was it to rescue two of them anyway?

We have just moved to Advocate with the dog as it also protects against lungworm which normal worming tablets don't.

Again another vet here who has moved her own pets to advocate. 12 years ago I needed to do the dog every 8 weeks for fleas and the cats every 5 weeks with frontline. However, now with the frontline I was needing to use it every 3 weeks.

thanks very much.

If you were me, would you write off the pack of Frontline you bought last week (I've used two sachets as i did both cats this weekend) and re-invest in Advocate ready for the next dose? Or would you use up the Frontline first?

If you don't have an active flea problem it is probably still going to be of use as a preventative so I would use what you have in that case. After that move I would advise you move onto advocate.
