My cat has started peeing on the carpet

She's 3, went through a phase when she was little & it stopped as soon as she was spayed. At least twice this week she's peed on the carpet at the bottom of the stairs. I'm not sure if it's because there was a mirror stood up in the corner...she had been pouncing at her reflection, or because there was also a box in the same corner that had been in a dog owners house.

I've moved the mirror & the box and put a litter tray in the corner. The carpet stinks, I've tried washing it, I've used vinegar. The most annoying thing is the carpet has only been down 8 weeks.

Several reasons cats do this, many times behavioural, but you do need to get her to the vets and ensure she does not have a urinary infection to start off. Once any physical reasons have been checked out and sorted if necessary then take a look at the advice on here

Thanks for that.

Good things to try to get rid of the smell are, dousing in soda water and then blot it and sprinkle damp carpet with bicarbonate of soda. Once it has drawn out all the moisture and dried hoover it up - but mind you use an old hoover bag and then empty it as otherwise your hoover will stink. The other things to try are Urine Off spray which you can buy on the internet (Amazon do it), Febreeze fabric spray is also very effective.

If your cat is doing it because she is feeling threatened you could also try either Feliway spray or plug in diffuser. This is a synthetic cat pheremone which calms them and deters them from weeing somewhere but obviously don't use it near her tray as she may not want to wee there!

If she persists, put newspaper where she is peeing, this way you can see if there are any traces of blood in her urine which is a sign of cystitis or other bladder infection. Make sure she has plenty of moisture in her diet and take her to the vet if you notice she is going little and often and struggling passing urine.
