Does anyone else have a Maine Coon?

We have adopted a rescue one, and he seems utterly bananas. Grin He is the clumsiest cat ever, and is uncapable of jumping onto anything without falling off. Just wanted to compare notes.

Oh and does the ear hair ever stop growing?

He's here and it's like having a baby - he just can't cuddle close enough! I'm in love.

He has flu Sad

Mine slept on my head when she was a kitten - she was 16 last week. I was only sleeping under a sheet in Feb - nothing like a fur bonnet for keeping you warm.

2 years ago dd talked us into getting a moggy kitten who was 'going to be drowned' and he jumped on her back for ages. It's an occasion if they are both within 3 feet of each other on the settee, as they are not exactly friends, although the jumping on her has pretty much stopped, now.

Description required bubblerock! Two of my three maine coons are insanely cuddley - I've had snuggle pusses before but they take it to a whole new level. They will sleep under the duvet (like a human, lying in side with head on pillow), or in the crook of my arm.......

bubblerock · 03/11/2010 22:23

I can't say too much about the cat on here unfortunately but he's bloody gorgeous - he also sleeps in bed, on me, in my arms anywhere as long as he's close!! I've never known a cat like him and wish I could keep him :(

bubblerock · 03/11/2010 22:48

btw.. do they all snore so loud or is it the cat flu??? lol

MrsSchadenfreude · 06/11/2010 22:25

LOL at fur bonnet!

Mine snores really loudly. Grin

Bubble - is there no way you could keep this cat, as he seems to be in love with you? I would have him in a heartbeat if I were in UK, as I think we are going to get our puss a friend. Smile

It does seem a shame you cant keep him as he has taken such a shine to you. It took my rescue boy over a year to come for cuddles.

The thumb sucking must be a coonie thing, my boy does it but the girls dont. The 2 oldest ones also love plastic, I have to get rid of cellophane and bags as soon as possible otherwise they find it and chew it!!

I would love another one but just dont have room Sad

mad4mainecoons · 18/11/2010 20:41

I breed and show maine coons Grin.
currently have 3 girls - the youngest of which is asleep on my shoulder as i type Smile

they are tremendous snuggle monsters, mine will get in my bed if allowed, love water, kitchen is often sodden due to them paddling in the dog bowl, and they "chirp" rather than meow.

love love them, best cats in the world ever! everyone who meets mine is in love. but the nervous ones are often a product of a bad experience or upbringing, time and patience will win them round as they are a breed that loves to be with humans. Smile

I have two - brother and sister, 10 years old now. They are huge cats (my next door neighbour has one and he is much smaller than mine) and they are very dog-like. Mine aren't bitey at all - they never bite or scratch (not even DD and she gives them plenty of cause).

Mine love water - they are fascinated by it. They are very, very affectionate and I love them to bits. I have never had such wonderful cats.

Now, if anyone wants a semi-feral seven month old lunatic mog... Why did I get another bloody cat?!!

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/11/2010 20:51

Mine covers his food up if he doesn't finish it. He drags the mat out from underneath and plonks it on top of his bowls. Trouble is, he has difficulty getting it back underneath again!

Oooh, I've got three too. One is 15 and is a real old boy, skinny and very outdoorsy so always needs his coat dealing with.

The "kittens" are nearly 2 and are huge with huge lynx ears, brother and sister, the boy is mad as a hatter, the girl very loving, both are lovely but they eat for England. The old boy has a deep voice but the kitten have really squeaky voices. They do eat any bird or mammal in sight though, not pleasant!

They are all quite clumsy and we have nearly hhad the firebrigade/tree routine with the kittens.

We only have a black and white moggy, but was given an IOU from DH on our wedding day for a Coon.

Madam is 17 now, has never liked other cats and is getting frailer, and we wouldn't want to inflict a younger, bossier cat on her.

One day (though there will be much sadness first when we lose Madam) I will have my wedding present. If I can rescue one, I will. And now I know who/where to ask!

for maine coon fans

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 24/11/2010 15:54

Can anyone tell me if they would be good with small children? I have a mouse problem and I think a MC might be the answer! (Or that's my excuse....)

tippytumbles · 26/11/2010 16:31

Scurryfunge thank you so much for that link - lots of books there I will order for my DD who is desperate for her own Maine Coon kitten. Hopefully she will enjoy these until we can find her the right friend Smile

vnmum · 26/11/2010 17:03

Both myself and DH would love a maine coon or a norwegian forest. we are moving in a few months and when we get settled we said we will try to visit some breeders to get an idea which breed would be the best for us. MC's are just so gorgeous though.

Mad4mainecoons After your post on here i checked your profile to see where you were and would you beleive that i am a VN too (well qualified but been out of practice for 7 years d to travelling and childrearing, but am planning on getting back into practice soon as after we move) and I like running(can't run too far yet but like it all the same). How bizarre Smile

vnmum · 26/11/2010 17:07

A Maine coon won the supreme cat show this year, absolutely gorgeous

here

scotsgirl23 · 09/12/2010 11:17

Orange I think it depends on the specific cat but mine are all fine with children - we'd only had my youngest cat 2 weeks when my daughter was born, she's 7 months now and they adore each other. They're also fine with toddlers - the worst they do is run away

mogwhistle · 09/12/2010 14:53

Been reading this thread with interest as we are getting two maine coon kittens just after Christmas, I am so excited! Xmas Smile

festivecoatgate · 09/12/2010 15:03

How do Maine Coons get on with dogs. Had my old puss PTS a couple of weeks ago. She always avoided the dog until the last couple of months of her life, when I think she had lost the plot and took to coming into the family room where the dog lives and wandering past him. He didn't really bother with her as she didn't run. He just sat looking at her and whimpering and quivering in excitement.

So miss having a cat around, and Maine Coons sound right up my street, so just wondering how they would get on with a Springer?

scotsgirl23 · 09/12/2010 20:02

We don't have a dog but all of mine have been introduced to my MILs retriever and been utterly fine. Especially if you are considering a kitten, they should be fine as long as you know the dog will be. I took one of mine to MILs to babysit for the day (to avoid losing kitten in a haze of DIY) and when I came back, the dog had been evicted from her bed and was sitting in the corner, and the 16 week old kitten was spread out in her bed. Very cute.

They are, generally, quite robust little creatures - the youngest a decent breeder will normally let a kitten go is about 13 weeks, and they're a decent size by then.

I've had two Maine Coons. Madeline was aunt to Phoenix. Madeline was the sweetest of cats. We only had her two years, got her at age 6. She died of a bone marrow disease. I still miss her. Madeline looked more like a Norwegian Forest Cat. I think she was already ill when I got her as she had decayed claws. They had black crud on them. We gave her antibiotics (previous owner said she couldn't take ab as they gave her diarrhea, not true.) I would soak her feet, then scrape off crud, then dab on hydrogen peroxide and rinse that off. I got the claws to almost heal--just had small holes in them. Madeline was so patient. When I first got Madeline, she held one paw off the floor and blood was dripping from it.

We got Phoenix at age 4 and she was 18 when we put her down. She was a beautiful cat. But just as a caution, I once had her hair cut by a new and bad groomer who cut off all her ruff, and it never grew as long ever again. Around age 15, Phoenix became deaf. At 17, blindness. She did fine with both. But her last year and a half she would not use litter box. She became so thin and frail, probably five pounds from a high of 21.

One timewhen she was fit and healthy, her coat became greasy and she wouldn't groom it. I think she got tired of grooming all that fur and became depressed. We got her hair cuta lion cut--and told her how cute she looked. As the hair grew back, she groomed it and always did after that.

Phoenix used to sit atop the refrigerator and LEAP down to the island when I was sitting there eating. Surprise!

I would love more MC cats, but we have 6 cats now. One was a drop off and he is great, is finally where he wants which is inside. Then there is a family of 4 (mom amd kittens) I caught that had been dumped. They live in garage in heated houses.
