Why are black cats difficult to home?

I would love a black kitten and I've noticed that lots of cat's homes say that black cats are hardly ever adopted.

Surely people aren't that vain or superstitious (sp?) about it?

We have a beautiful 100% black cat, and when we see another black cat anywhere, DD* likes to pretend the cat has followed us and makes a comment.

*We do it, even when DD isn't there.

But in terms of adoption, I'd get the cat that took my fancy rather than its colour, although I'm not a massive fan of white cats.

Vulgar · 12/09/2010 20:35

The Celia Hammond trust says the ones that they find hardest to rehome are the white ones with black blobs as most people are looking for a uniform pattern or colour.

Cat's, i love all colours.Smile They are fabulous in their variety.

I'd take either the longest resident or teh ugliest tbh, ask which was proving ahrder to home

But I am a sucker for a sob miaow and have had some really severely imapired cats at times- limbs missing, even needing kangaroo care style nursing......

We once had an ancient deaf cat. It was the one and only time I've met a deaf cat - and boy was he noisy. I had no idea cats could be noisy until I met him.He died the same week that ds1 was born :( He used to sit on my bump all through pregnancy being kicked by ds1.

I now run a part time business pet sitting and get to visit loads of cats - they're all adorable and funny and most quite quickly become my chums.

I've got a black cat and our next door neighbour has an almost identical one, neither have collars so it's confusing sometimes when you have just fed him and see the neighbour's cat running along the wall outside, you do a bit of a double take! Our cat has a little kink in his tail though.

I named him Bernard after Bernard Black (of Black Books) and now DS is a toddler he quite often resembles his namesake - grumpy and dishevelled. He's actually really affectionate but DS keeps trying to cuddle him too hard.

We adopted 2 lovely black girls last Easter but have had to have them fostered again due to major problems when DD arrived. They were kept indoors and I think the impact of the baby and all the disruption to them was intensified to an unworkable level for them :(. We had a few poo incidents etc and we knew it would get worse when DD started crawling, so we gave them back to the foster mum we got them from. This was 1st August and they are still there waiting to be rehomed :(

Their profile is here - Suky and Delilah and they can be rehomed together or separately.

If anyone is in the Bristol area and would like to offer them a home I would be so pleased :)

How lovely are cats. I couldn't be without mine.

SanctiMoanyArse · 13/09/2010 09:28

Our cat no3w has been with us 11 years, he was in a box in a field, taped up like SGM's. Luckily the bastards who did it (apparently he was evil- erm no, adorable but hungry!) boasted to a friend of a friend who fethced him and we were looking for a cat as we'd just moved in together so....

We also had a cat named Tripod; at 5 weeks he'd been rescued by teh vets my sister works at, missing a tail, leg, damaged other leg and just messed up- he ahd been licking the inside of a crisp bag in hunger. He wsa in a terrible state and lived down my jumper for weeks! In the end he was so happy with us butnobody else, but after 18 months he developed a kidney stone. the local vets refused to see him (now know they cant do that) and he had heart issue from the injuries that killed him post surgery, the vets said it had been in his records but never passed on. He cost us a fortune but i think ds1 learned mroe about love in that year than anything else we ever taught him. The vets were pretty sure the injuries were deliberately inflicted andI really struggle with the sheer awfulness of someone deliberately doing that to a kitten. nevertheless he ahd a good life all in, and if cash were not so tight we'd take another like him like a shot- only our other cart is pushing 14 now so a bit elderly for it.

I have a black kitty too and she is a real character along with her tortoiseshell sister Smile

Notyetamummy · 23/09/2010 14:35

I really don't understand it - all cats are brilliant.

Our male black cat moved himself in when we were away.

He came in through our cat flap. He was a stray, intact tom and had sprayed on EVERYTHING! The carpets, the beds, the sofas - everything had to be professionally cleaned. He'd also ransacked the place - we initially thought we'd been robbed!

Anyway, we tried to encourage him out but he was very scared so we called the RSPCA. A man came and caught him. He was severely underweight, flea-ridden & obviously had been stray for a while. The man rang some rescue centres and there wasn't any room and he said that, being black and male it was unlikely that he'd be re-homed anyway, so he would take him to be put to sleep! Angry I was not having that, and said that we'd happily keep him.

6 months on, de-flead, neutered, wormed & well-fed and he's the most gorgeous lovable cat ever, I can't remember our home without him. He gets on very well with our other 'white & tabby' cat(who just celebrated her 1st birthday) and 'friendly local cat' who is also black. Poppy often spends ages licking his face. Grin The vet thinks he's around three years old. He follows me everywhere and always comes when called.

He is not sleek and elegant though - he walks funny - the vet thinks that he may have been kicked or hit by a car at some point Sad

Oh, and he's been named Sherlock (can you guess what our surname is?).

I adore my black cat and wouldn't have him any other way.

flickor · 23/09/2010 14:47

I have a lovely rescue black cat from the Cats Protection league. He is very nervous - keeps licking the fur off his back. He looks a bit like peppy la pue ?. Not taking him to the vet again. Poor thing got a collar round his neck (to break the cycle). Nearly had a break down. Bit of a highly strung character - I think my pregnancy has made it worse however he does like the nursery and likes me being at home.

preghead · 23/09/2010 14:48

Are they? I was thinking about getting some kitens in the future and would be actively looking for some black one I think as I think they look aesthetically better - though don't really care of course, or maybe a black and a tabby. This is what we always had as kids.

reallywoundup · 23/09/2010 14:57

i have two jet black (matching!) male cats- they have been done though.

I wanted black cats......... i wanted female cats.............. i got two black balls of fluff who developed bollocks Shock But i love 'em dearly. Can't understand why people would overlook black cats, male cats i can understand- they spray.

izzybiz · 23/09/2010 15:00

I have the most beautiful little black cat!
I've had her since she was 4 weeks old (she was going to be drowned Angry )

I had to syringe feed her, and wipe her to make her wee, every 2-4 hours.

She is 11 now, really dainty, with long fluffy hair and the most beautiful face. She has a sort of 'posh' air about her! Grin

Black cats are fab!

lilruthie · 06/10/2010 12:15

I didn't know that! I have always wanted a black cat and now I have one. They are the most beautiful colour to have IMO.

rainrainrainsun · 09/10/2010 21:25
