Has anyone done this? I've booked to walk at Easter and can't wait.

I've not but it sounds lovely. It's nice to take advantage of the later Easter this year Wink

It’s beautiful 😻 not done the whole thing, but most it in sections. One of my favourite places.

Ilovetowander · 23/02/2025 11:02

It is lovely, how many days and which direction? I have done it once in full from Helmsley and parts but not all from Filey. Some bits are tougher than others.

Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree · 06/03/2025 15:57

@Ilovetowander we're hoping to do it in full from Helmsley. Got 8 full days so hopefully it's doable. I'd be very grateful for any top tips. Is it mostly dog friendly?

DH and I haven't done the whole thing in one go but we have done all of the sections at least once and a lot of it with DDog. Overall I'd say it's pretty dog friendly. You obviously need to look out for sheep up on the moors, and depending on your dog, he/she might need a hand with a slightly scrambly bit on the Wainstones. There are some nice dog-friendly places to eat/drink on the way - High Paradise Farm cafe (which you'll pass on your first or second day depending on how you break the days up) is my favourite.

If you want to get a taste for it, look up Elli Hikes on YouTube. She walked it with her dog in January. She faced a lot of issues with pheasant shooting for the first couple of days (which you shouldn't in April) but her videos give a great overview of the route.

Thank you very much @nearly55 that's really helpful. I'll take a look.

Well we did it and it was absolutely fantastic. Overall I think I preferred the Moors section but the coastal path was pretty spectacular too.
There were a lot of ups and downs, which I certainly felt in my knees but a really beautiful and varied walking amongst the most stunning scenery. I can highly recommend it.

Although we were very lucky with the weather.

I've visited the area many times but only for day trips. Did you have luggage transfer or were you self supporting? Did you book an organised package or just your own accommodation?

We stayed centrally in Great Ayton and then we left a car at each end point, A bit of a faff on the first and last days but worked for us. That way I didn't need to carry too much each day which I was very grateful for as last year on The South Downs way, my knees really struggled with a heavy back pack.

How many days did it take? What did you do for food?
Something I’ve always wanted to do!

We took 7 and a half days averaging around 15 miles a day. We had rented a house so we made and took packed lunches every day and in the evening we went to the cracking local pub, cooked or one night we got an Indian takeaway. I have done other walks taking everything with me but this was far nicer and made it feel much more of a holiday too.
