Castle ruins with an upstairs?

We’ve been to lots of castle ruins and walked around ground level but my son would like to go to one where they still have some of the other floors or stairs remaining that you can go up. Does anyone know of any? Ideally south west area

OP posts:

Sorry I've confused a couple of people (including OP I think) by making two posts - I was suggesting that National Trust places might interest him too - and then in the 2nd post I linked 2 NT places - and they are not ruins or castles correct. Sorry to confuse!

Restormal castle in Lostwithiel, Cornwall. Ruins, but you can walk along the top.

Castle ruins with an upstairs?
Ted27 · 25/02/2022 10:13

Warwick and Kenilworth castles

Warwick not a ruin but has walls, towers and dungeons

purplesequins · 25/02/2022 10:13

caernarfon castle

not an upstairs as such but you can walk the perimeter of the castle wall.

Another vote for Old Wardour Castle!

sqirrelfriends · 25/02/2022 10:18

I seem to remember Totnes castle having stairs, though that's was about 15 years ago.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 25/02/2022 10:18

The whole castle, or just a tower, for example?

I am sure I have been up stone spiral stairs to towers in places like Bodiam Castle.

Does it have to be ruined?

What about the Tower of London?

Norwich Castle is an intact castle, but it is undergoing restoration and refurb, check the website for current access.

Also Windsor Castle, you go upstairs on the public visits, but obv it is not a ruin!

@TheGirlInTheGreenDress

Goodrich Castle near Ross on Wye has an upstairs and is close to the South West
This was going to be my suggestion- good for hide and seek! (Respectfully, of course)

S Wales, Pembroke castle was on the Michael portillo show yesterday, proper keep. Can recommend Celtic camping near st David's ti make it a holiday

MrsMcGarry · 25/02/2022 10:20

Porchester castle near Portsmouth. Plenty of ruined parts to walk around and a well preserved tower you can climb up 3/4 floors

countdowntonap · 25/02/2022 10:22

Tutbury Castle tutburycastle.com/

Craftypuss · 25/02/2022 10:25

Carew Castle is in Pembrokeshire, and is great to explore- not very big, but lots of bits to explore! Pembroke , as others have said, is good (including Wogan's Cavern underneath). Manorbier Castle is in the same area.
Not as far west, Caerphilly is impressive.

extractorfactor · 25/02/2022 10:26

I think Berry Pomeroy in Devon has both dungeons and upper ramparts, but it's been years since I visited and can't fully remember.
Pendennis as previously mentioned is definitely worth a visit.
St. Michael's mount (Cornwall) has stunning views from its ramparts but have a look on the national trust website to check it's what your after as it's probably a good three / four hours drive from Bristol so could be a bit too far, it's also worth doing it later spring or summer, as you might be lucky enough to see some great
marine life.
Wales has some fantastic castles Pembroke and Kidwelly would probably tick a lot of your boxes, but Pembroke might be a bit far.

Magicmagician · 25/02/2022 10:26

Chepstow castle definitely worth a visit and not that far from you

TeeNoG · 25/02/2022 10:30

If you're ever in Scotland you could visit Linlithgow Palace. Not a castle, but a ruin with an upstairs, overlooking a Loch. Lots of nice places for lunch very nearby too.

WouldBeGood · 25/02/2022 10:30

You should book a holiday to Dumfries and Galloway where there are loads of these! I used to go all the time when DS was wee.

Caerlaverock castle; Orchardton Tower; Kirkcudbright castle; Cardoness Castle, ti name but a few!

gingerhills · 25/02/2022 10:32

Rochester castle! There are loads of floors and you can even go out on the battlements, even though the place is ruined. It's great.

Unihorn · 25/02/2022 10:33

cadw.gov.wales/visit/places-to-visit/castles-wales there are over 400 castles in Wales in varying states!

Castles I've visited and would recommend from in the south east of Wales roughly - Castell Coch, Cardiff, Usk, Dunraven, Caerphilly, Chepstow, Caldicot, White Castle and Skenfrith. They aren't all ruined but worth having a look at each to see what you think. Some are described below in this article:

Restormal castle in Lostwithiel, Cornwall. Ruins, but you can walk along the top.
I was going to suggest Restormel too! I love that castle.

Launceston Castle in Cornwall also has a tower you can climb.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 25/02/2022 11:04

Berry Pomeroy castle
