Birds nest in the garden

Please understand that I know nothing about ornithology. Smile
We’ve had a birds nest in the garden for awhile but we’ve been unable to tell if it belongs to the lovely little birds or the pigeons.
I have today found this broken shell on the floor underneath the nest. Could somebody please from this, tell me who the nest would belong to?
Second photo is for size comparison.

Hard to tell from your photo but have a look on here www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/03/identify-eggshells/

Thanks very much Wonky
I think it’s wood pidgeon based on the size and colour.

Wood pigeons will breed a couple of times a year if there is a good food supply, ie spring and summer. We have quite a big family of them now near us in a big conifer, which they share with a pair of magpies and their two fledges. I love watching them.

I have a bird bath and a bird table they all use, along with other birds.

We had a pigeon nesting in an elderflower tree. Both of the chicks were found on the ground underneath, one dead and one severely injured. They were quite big chicks, some feathers amongst the fluff.

Glad to hear they will breed again. We had to dispatch the injured one Sad

Slight that's sad (and traumatic when you have to euthanize an injured bird - personal experience Sad). Do you think it was predators? Rats for example can do a hell of a lot of damage, going for soft tissues.

I actually think they may have fallen out and then a cat had seen them. A cat wouldn't have got into the tree but the nest was very small for chicks of that size. Fingers crossed for a better outcome next time.

Pigeons are a PITA as they eat the chicken feed but they're so benign I can't help liking them.
