I have been doing hikes in the south east and also in France and it’s occurred to me there’s a beautiful country north of the border I should try and explore. I like to hike alone for 2-3 days staying in hostels along the way. I’d love suggestions for routes in Scotland, taking in beautiful scenery of course. I’m not a Munrobagger though but can manage some ascents usually do 600-1000m when in France . Thanks in advance.

Following! Have never done anything like this but would love to get into it.

I’m from the highlands and can if you are looking for something not extreme but very very nice recommend Deeside. I’d use ballater as a base, it’s got some nice cafes/a proper shop/bus to Aberdeen.
Short walks like cragendarroch, longer more dramatic walks like Loch Nagar, then there’s the Glen Tanar estate which you can spend days exploring or go out on a horse ride and spare your legs.
Really good variety of waking from strolling along the Dee to some really testing stuff.
And plenty of distilleries to visit if the weather is naff

The first few days if the west highland way (around 12-20 miles) is very nice.

Oh thank you queen of Scotland. I am not rad or hardcore and do not underestimate the wildness of Scotland so it’s good to get a more gentle recommendation. I’m not a whisky buff but love lots of other Scottish produce eg honey, oats, salmon, so I’m sure I’d find something if the weather is poor. Thanks also Lord, I’ll have a look at the west highland way. I love the islands so it might be possible to combine.

Sadly it’s not the islands. It a walk from milngavie to fort William! The leg past loch lomond is lovely.

The West Highland Way is fairly low level and goes through lots of places to stay.

Thanks thatmustbe. And lord prof. I remember taking a bus from fort William to Oban and going past a loch, synergy it was loch lo one, the views were breathtaking in places.

Good lord, predictive texting Shock. “Maybe it was Loch Lomond”!

Look at the walkhighlands website. Excellent resource and lots of friendly advice from walkers and climbers for all levels of walks.
I've used it many times to plan trips.
There are beautiful walks all over Scotland, don't discount the islands where you can combine hills with lovely beach walks.
Enjoy!
