Why have they started wrapping bales in pink plastic as well as black?

It always used to be black, perhaps occasionally grey.
Now I keep seeing pink.
How did this happen all of a sudden?
Hoping there are some farming MNers who can throw some light on it!

I think it makes them easier for cows etc to see them in the dark, thus reducing bovine/hay bale related accidents.

I'm in Sweden ours are normally white but last yr most were pink. I was told it was to do with cancer research, maybe its the same in the UK.

SavoyCabbage · 03/09/2017 16:54

I've seen purple.

Liz38 · 03/09/2017 16:54

A farming friend of mine did it last year to raise money for cancer research.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/09/2017 16:54

The plot thickens!
Do many cows hurt themselves bumping into hay bales?!
If it's cancer research it certainly beats coy Facebook memes about bras and handbags.

I've heard it's to raise awareness of breast cancer.
It doesn't look very nice so I hope it's doing some good.

We have pink bales with emojis on the side down the road. They're a charity thing and they look so much better than the boring bales Smile

ReggaetonLente · 03/09/2017 17:05

It's to raise money for breast cancer research. The company who makes the wrapping gives a sizeable donation to a breast cancer research charity.

StepAwayFromCake · 03/09/2017 17:05

How does wrapping your bales in pink raise money?

I've seen them in purple, too.

I thought they wrapped hay bales in black so that they would heat up and ferment into silage. So presumed that the ones wrapped in other colours were for other purposes.

ReggaetonLente · 03/09/2017 17:05

I love how it looks! They look like marshmallows in the fields!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/09/2017 17:08

Ha, I think I will tell ds2 they're giant marshmallows.

Oh wow!

Fekko · 03/09/2017 17:09

I've seen ones with smiley faces on them. Much jollier than the plain old black ones.

GinGeum · 03/09/2017 17:16

Yes, it's as Regg says. They also sell pink baler twine which gives a contribution to cancer research, too.

Ames33 · 03/09/2017 17:21

Yeah, I heard it was for cancer research. I like seeing them, especially the ones with smiley faces!
