Had a lovely 30 minutes watching the birds in the front garden

Firstly Mr Pheasant came calling quite literally, so I threw some feed out on the grass for him then in the 30 minutes I was standing at the kitchen window watching him hoover it up I saw...

1 daddy black bird feeding his chick in our conifer trees. The mammy hasn't been seen for nearly a week now so has probably been nabbed by a cat or a sparrow hawk.

Chaffinches having a nosey, having a bit to eat then buggering off.

Every now and then a lesser redpoll turns up then disappears.

A black cap.

Sparrows that have taken up nesting in the swift box we have in the eves.

Several blue tits coming and going.

2 coal tits pulling the fibres off the underlay on top of the guinea pigs hutch. There are little bald patches emerging and now know the culprits.

There have been 6 or so Goldfinches on the sun flower hearts.

There are great tits fighting over the sunflower seeds.

The resident Robin is perched on the edge of the bucket waiting.

Nut hatches swooping in between the great tits and nabbing the seed of its choice and dropping the ones it doesn't want. I think there was a fledgeling on at one point because it didn't seem to know what to do at first but then awkwardly got the gist of it and left happy.

There's a pair of wood pigeons on the ground getting what ever is dropped.

Then there is a pair of Dunnocks scratting around in the grass and a little Wren shows it's face every now and then.

Then the Jack Daws casing the joint to figure out how to get at the seeds but they are too big to fit between the bars on the feeders.

Then to top it off and I love these a pair of long tail tits. Little fluff balls with tails.

I could stand here all day just watching them. Shame I have house work to do really.

Grin

Just spent 10 minutes watching a baby dunnock being fed by its parents under the conifer trees, it was very very cute Grin

The camera has been fixed so I am just watching as I think they will get fed quite soon. The chicks are really quite big now. The egg is still there but for now she isn't sitting on it.

SheWhoDaresGins · 06/05/2016 09:29

The chicks are coming along a treat aren't they Mummy?

Can I interrupt you with a funny?
Our local, urban website has a thread about wildlife- mainly birds and some escaped turtles etc.
Someone posted the following:

'Anyone know what this bird is called? Is it a heron?
Was walking slowly amongst the bushes around a park pond.'

I'll wait before I post the picture so you get the joy of thinking about herons and then looking at the photo...

ApocalypseSlough · 06/05/2016 09:35

The bill!

SheWhoDaresGins · 06/05/2016 09:44

Yep it's a heron alright Grin

Reminds me of a lovely old lady who had a caravan near ours and exclaimed she was so happy she had seen a pelican, it was a heron. I didn't have the heart to correct her Grin

Breakfast time !

SheWhoDaresGins · 07/05/2016 11:57

Sad I've had to take all my feeders down, a big group of starlings have been ransacking them since yesterday afternoon.

Mummylin · 07/05/2016 13:57

They are so greedy aren't they ! We had to take ours down a few years ago because we had a rat !! And we still get loads of squirrels and pigeons that decimate the feeding tubes. I try and chase them off so the small birds get a share at least !

SheWhoDaresGins · 07/05/2016 19:15

MrGin and I have been taking turns sitting in the front watching while the little birds get some food and we keep chasing the starlings when we see them.

the housemartins have caught up with the swallows now

just dozens of them swooping about....not sure who has bagsied the nests, but they are certainly making them selves at home.

Mummylin · 08/05/2016 14:25

This morning one of the chicks was picking its own food from the ground, so progress indeed. I almost feel like their mother Grin

Mummylin · 09/05/2016 19:36

How they gave grown in two weeks, they are beginning to move themselves around a bit now and this evening one of then actually opened his wings.

They are coming along in leaps and bounds Mummy

I'm still having a stand off with the starlings. I did however see mammy and daddy blackbird feeding their chick. She returned last week. The chick is bobbing around the garden and looks like it's going to be a male. He's getting quite brave like his parents when I am out there.

I thought of this thread earlier when I heard flapping from what I thought was just outside the front door. Lavender dog was out there, big soppy thing that even the pheasants don't mind.

As I walked down the hallway I realised that it wasn't outside, a lovely, very beautiful little swallow was in my snug, flapping at the window.

I hate anything flying around by my head but conquered my fear and caught it in a tea towel, when it calmed down, beautiful eyes - and he flew away happily.

Mummylin · 12/05/2016 12:51

Nothing to report on peregrines at the moment, they aren't really doing much ! Except eating and sleeping, mum is leaving them for longer times but they don't walk around or anything yet. The fourth egg is still there and in one piece.

Mummylin · 12/05/2016 16:33

The first one has walked over to the other side of the nesting box. It did look funny

Mummylin · 13/05/2016 09:41

There is no web cam today as the chicks are being ringed for future tracking.

Mummylin · 14/05/2016 12:26

Chicks are ringed. There are two males and one female. Looks like they have removed the 4th egg. All walking / stumbling around the nest now.

Mummylin · 14/05/2016 16:33

Mum, dad and three now big chicks !

SheWhoDaresGins · 17/05/2016 10:01

Let the dog out for a pee last night and heard some strange noises coming from the path.

There were the 2 hedgehogs I have been watching. The male was grunting and pushing her to go in to certain directions. This went in for a good 45 minutes until an howl flew over hooting away and the male scarpered leaving his mate on the edge of the lawn.

This is her here. She sat for ages just looking around then eventually tootled off in the same direction of her partner.

It was really funny watching and listening to them.
