Approach shoes

DDs are off on an Outward Bound trip and the list says "approach shoes".
I don't want to sound ignorant but no idea what they are. Help!

Approach shoes are sometimes called trail shoes. They're kind of like trainers with a rugged sole, normally grey or brown.

I can't imagine they're 100% necessary if its an additional cost you could do without. I have some and they're nice, but if I didn't have them then I'd use my normal hiking boots for rough ground. Traditionally they've been used by rock climbers on the approach to a big multipitch climb where you have to carry your shoes/boots up with you once you've put your rock boots on. Easier to carry lighter approach shoes than hiking boots.

Thanks for that Viva I guess we'll use what we already have in the cupboard. I reckon we inherited a pair from cousins and I didn't know what they were Blush One DD has large feet so she could use her combat boots from Cadets maybe?

They are sturdy trainers, often waterproof, with a walking boot sole. My brother calls them "landrover trainers". Lots if different types [ and £] about. Try Blacks, Go Outdoors, TKMaxx or independent outdoor shop.
