Anyone recommend one that's wide and nicely padded - after a couple of hours in the saddle mine leaves me feeling like I've been been rodeo riding on a hedgehog.

I want to know this too.

Oh well Myleene, maybe they're all out on their bikes?

Patience ladies!!

This is a good reasonably priced one. The dip in the middle makes a huge difference to comfort levels, my saddle actually has a hole in it ands it's good for hours in the saddle. Do you wear proper padded cycling shorts as well? That makes a huge difference to comfort levels. Decathlon have good cheap cycling shorts, tight ones or baggy ones.

MyleeneCrass · 30/03/2012 12:21

With their comfy saddles

TheEpilator · 30/03/2012 13:19

Ooh padded shorts Piff I like the sound of that. (I do sometimes put a panty liner in for a similar effect Blush ) Will look at that link, ta.

Make sure you have a women specific saddle. Most bikes are equipped with mens saddles by default. Mens sit bones are closer together so if a women rides on a mans saddle she will be supported on her bits not her sit bones, which is unsurprisingly uncomfortable.

My most comfortable saddle is a really skinny, minimally padded one...

TheEpilator · 30/03/2012 13:40

IAGTBF a skinny minimally padded one? How does that work then?

Found this which looks good, has a hole as Piff suggested but is quite padded. Do you not think that would be any good?

I need one too

I also need a bike :o

TheEpilator · 30/03/2012 13:58

cake might be worth getting the bike first then work on the saddle! (or just buy a sofa and cut out the middle bit Grin )

Oh I want anew saddle too. I love my bike but it has a men's saddle (being a men's bike n all) and it's a bit unpleasant after a couple of hours.

GrimmaTheNome · 01/04/2012 18:51

I'll be looking at those, but DH's need is greater than mine - he sometimes has to get off and walk for a while towards the end of a bike ride. He doesn't like dressing up in lycra so I'm not sure I'll ever get him into cycling shorts even though I assume that would help. So what's a good seat for a bloke - we ride only offroad, no drop handlebars so weight nearly all on bum not distributed.

TheEpilator · 03/04/2012 11:58

Right, I bought this seat so I'll let you know how I get on with it! Wiggle included some free Haribo too, bless em.

Or of course you could just switch to a recumbent...

GrimmaTheNome · 06/04/2012 20:56

TheEpilator, your link is not sit-onable. Grin

discrete · 06/04/2012 21:01

Key thing, whether for a man or woman, is to measure the gap between your sit-bones. Basically sit on a foam mat (like a yoga mat) and measure the gap between the two deepest indentations.

Then get a seat that is the right size for your sit bone gap. I use a Jett, it is great for me.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 06/04/2012 21:02

Grimma - he can always wear loose ordinary shorts over the top :) That is until he's uber fit and wants to show his lycra arse off!

Epilator - I have a GEL SEAT COVER from Decathalon, I would sell my soul rather than part with it!! Way better than the gel seats themselves, but I imagine both would be good. It wasn't expensive either (I've had it that long I can't remember how much it was, but it was a 'Oh is that all, worth a shot' purchase when money was fairly tight, so must have been cheap Grin

torshihunter · 06/04/2012 21:10

I can ride all day on a brooks leather saddle. I have been wearing it in for 10 years tho! IME more padding on saddle = more potential for chafe, far better to wear padded shorts/underwear and use a hard gender specific saddle. Low cost shorts can be found at Aldi or Lidl, and they last years. you can buy specific baggy cycle shorts with padded inserts if you dont want to exhibit your bum shape in public.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 06/04/2012 21:32

Has anyone tried chamois cream? I'm thinking of giving it a go.

TheEpilator · 09/04/2012 10:39

thanks Grimma - I copied my previous link from upthread thinking it would re-link, but obvs not.

Haven't tried the seat properly yet (bloody rain), but it seems comfy riding round the garden.

discrete yes, it can feel the difference on the sit-bones - on the old one I end up shifting from side to side to give each bone a rest after we've been going for a couple of hours.
