I would love to hear about your favourite long walks. I love the south downs way, especially round afriston and the last bit up to beachy head

We haven't really done many 'long walks' since we had DD. She climbed all the 3 peaks (Yorkshire) over the course of 2 weekends just before she turned 7 and since then hard to get her to do many proper walks. She's done Pen-y-Ghent a couple of times since but that's quite short - she loves the scrambly bit near the top. Extra fun with a dachshund! Grin

We really need to get her up Helvellyn - we're within striking district of the Lakes so there's no real excuse. And I've never done Scafell.

We were supposed to do Snowdon a few years ago but the weather just wasn't right for taking a child up there (snow and fog!)

The last 'long walk' DH and I did when free of her for the day was a ramble all round Silverdale. Its a lovely corner which gets overlooked because of its proximity to the Lakes. We had dropped her very early at Lancaster train station, then continued up first to Leighton moss RSPB for some birdwatching and brekkie then carried on walking all day till time to pick her up.

Helvellyn is great. I quite like Old Man as well.

For a quick blast Pendle Hill is nice. Might do that this afternoon thinking about it!

The Cairngorms are brilliant. So much to do there!!

For further away places I love Chamonix. Fantastic walks. Sometimes I will get the cable car up into the mountain and walk accross and come out further across the valley into a different town. Lovely!

Oh I forgot Pen Y gent.

I have taken all sorts of kids up there over the years and then finished off in the cafe for a chocolate!!!

Kayzr · 24/02/2012 10:03

I loved doing the 3 peaks in Yorkshire. My Dad did it in the 70's and I had wanted to do it since I was little.

Roseberry Topping near Middlesbrough is a nice walk.

Upahill I have only ever been to Pendle Hill to do a ghost hunt thing for my hen night. I keep thinking it would be a nice place to walk but something puts me off.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/02/2012 10:08

This thread is meant for long walks - do we have one yet for good walks with kids? (not too long but interesting, scrambly, wildlifey) type thing? If not should we start one?

Sneezeblossom · 24/02/2012 10:13

Yes we should have as many threads as possible

Kayzr - It's nice honestly.

last couple of years I have been going up on summer solstice and it has been great.

Over the last two weeks I have been up four times to practice my navigation.

We went up a couple of Mondays ago to try and see the Northern Lights - we saw bugger all except cloud - not suprising seeing that we are in Lancashire!!

It is fab for star gazing though on cloudless nights as it is obviously higher up than Burnley, Clitheroe and Blackburn you don't get the light pollution.

I avoid at Halloween. Too mad!!

OrmIrian · 24/02/2012 10:16

How long?

It's been a long time since I've been on a long walk. DC don't do long walks Hmm I've been long longish runs though (up to 12 miles). Do they count? But nowhere anyone here would've heard of. Just pootling around the villages and footpaths near the Quantocks in Somerset.

I would say a long walk needs to take more than half a day.

A ramble or a stroll is a couple of hours.

Then there are long distance paths as well. (Would it be a bit much to put them in a separate thread?)

Those are my personal definitions, anyway.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/02/2012 10:23

Orm - oh, there's some lovely walks on the Quantocks. We used to stay near minehead a lot and walk there, and in Exmoor and that part of the Coast path (which is fab). The Exmoor combes are some of the pleasantest walking imaginable. We were rather put out last year to find a largish caravan site had appeared in the Doone valley but fortunately most of the people from it didn't seem to have a range of more than a couple of hundred yards.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/02/2012 10:24

Def have an extra thread for long distance paths.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/02/2012 10:30

OK, added walks with kids thread here

Northey · 24/02/2012 10:40

And I've done LDPs. Though I hope we can actually fill them all.

EssieW · 24/02/2012 13:44

Have found my natural home on mumsnet...
Lots of favourite places - love Yorkshire dales, particularly ingleborough

Also love Scotland - west coast. Haven't done as much as I want to there. Torridon is one favourite. Aonach eagach ridge another.
