What would you feed this skinny corgi?

This boy came home from the rescue this week. He's a young adult, unsure of precise age, perhaps 2. He's been underfed and underexercised his whole life, probably a would-be stud dog kept in a shed or something. Vet said he's basically healthy, but underweight and lacking muscle. The shelter had him on Harringtons kibble, which he likes well enough, but he's so hyperactive and zoomy I don't think he's going to gain much weight.

no idea, but he is beautiful

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/01/2023 05:09

No idea why I posted that anonymously! Name change fail. He's a funny boy, he runs like a rabbit. He was very shy of hands but has started to let me pet his head, and even gave me a little lick yesterday.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 21/01/2023 05:15

He's gorgeous!!

I think we're used to seeing them overweight though, so to start with, make sure you have a realistic image of what he should look lije.

I thought your post was going to be about an actual fox, so lots of people might skip past your thread thinking you shouldn't feed foxes?!

I'd ask MN if they could please change that.

id make sure he's walked a good amount and do some agility type training to build up his muscles.

I'd research best food for breed/age & use high quality treats.

im sure being looked after properly he'll naturally gain strength/weight.

he's a lucky boy!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/01/2023 05:19

Thought it was a fox not a dog lol. I was going to say eggs bacon or ham, either for fox or dog 🐶🐕

Aww he looks like a good boy! I have no idea about feeding dogs but just wanted to say he looks so lovely. Hope he’s fighting fit soon!

MaliMom · 21/01/2023 05:20

Beautiful!
Iv got a corgi mix who never stops as well

Instead of changing his food as he's having a lots of changes at the moment with a new home I would suggest adding some good quality meat to it.
Some sardines, fresh, or marrow bones would be good not too many though.
Tripe while it stinks is also great to add and very nutritious.

I would look at moving him to a better quality dry food if you can in the future maybe in a few months once he is settled in

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/01/2023 05:27

I asked MN to change the title! Yeah we definitely won't make him fat, he's got a very long back and short legs so he should be trim for his joints. He is currently just under 13kg, I think 15kg would be about right - he's a Cardigan, and his paws and head are quite big. He's got a bark like a German Shepherd, really deep voice. I bet he would love sardines! He is actually my mum's dog, but I live just around the corner and dogsit and walk her dogs a lot (she also has a Pembroke). I'm going over later this morning, I'll bring some sardines for him. Definitely open to changing his kibble in the future.

shimmerbubbles · 21/01/2023 05:55

I'd probably focus on several meals of a good quality food - breakfast, lunch, dinner and before bed, if that works for you. Maybe a daily kong of extra bits and pieces - scrambled eggs, sardines, coconut oil etc. But take it slowly so he doesn't get the squirts!

With some muscle building from regular exercise it shouldn't take long for his condition to improve. Watch to make sure those ears don't make him fly away in the meantime!

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/01/2023 06:11

If anything, the ears look bigger in person. Yeah I've been saying take it slow, we want him to gain healthy muscle not get diarrhea. My mum's a bit of a feeder and hates to see a thin dog! He's started to let me pet him and his spine is all knobbly out under the fur. He also seems to have very narrow shoulders and hips, probably because he's not been allowed to run around and develop them. The shelter initially guessed his age at 3, then 2. But he acts like a puppy in his mannerisms, constanly bouncing and play-bowing to the other dog. He's sexually mature (neutered just before we took him home), but I wouldn't be surprised if he was only 1.

Corgiowner · 21/01/2023 09:00

Ive got a cardigan he just over a year and weighs 15kg he's deliberately kept on the on the thin side of normal as I worry about his back.
Their ears are amazing mine has huge ears and a very fine tail. They are such fun dogs they love life and have a great sense of humour and as you've discovered a big woof. They love to run around, there used to be a cartoon called Rhubarb (the dog) and Custard (the cat) mine runs just Rhubarb.

ShouldIknowthisalready · 21/01/2023 10:43

I would work on building up muscle slowly but consistently. I would be happier building up muscle rather than just weight gain.

If you are not careful you will have a fat dog with no muscle and then hard to gain muscle as too fat etc.

A good quality food with good ingredients.

If you want Kibble Millies Wolfheart is a good place to start.

He is stunning - love a corgi Smile

iloveeverykindofcat · 22/01/2023 12:50

He's going well. Here he is sleeping indoors like an actual domestic animal rather than a wild street fox. I think he looks a bit less thin than when he got here and some nice new fur is growing in. He does get overwhelmed by sudden noises or activity though, and will either run or show his teeth. But he now lets me pet his head and body quite a lot, and gives me a few little licks.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/01/2023 13:36

My friend had a spaniel that struggled to gain weight and was advised to use working dog kibble, avoid food that says no grain as some carbs are good for underweight dogs.

iloveeverykindofcat · 22/01/2023 13:50

Yeah I think he can handle some carbs, he runs them off fast enough! Millie's Wolfheart seems like a good kibble - I researched based on this thread - so we're going to gradually start him on that when he's more settled. That one is grain free, but he also gets treats.

He also had a little bit of chicken today from a visitor, probably the first chicken he's ever tasted. We're veggie so its not a regular thing but a treat. He did like that. Unlike most of the Pembrokes we've had, this one is not a stomach on legs. He likes his food well enough, but he's definitely not greedy.

StopGo · 22/01/2023 14:20

Oh my he is so handsome 😍

We've got an under weight Cocker girl. Vet really wanted her to gain weight as she needs a minor operation on her leg. Twelve weeks later she hasn't gained an ounce. Vet has now decided she is who she is, a bouncy bundle of love.

She is 18 months old and settled on a diet of Scrumbles puppy kibble and wet food with vet approved extras. She loves sweet potato. Mind you she also adores the vet and his supply of treats.

Corgiowner · 22/01/2023 16:46

Mine isn’t a stomach on legs either he likes his food but is not food obsessed I also used to have a Pembroke and he was totally food obsessed he would kill anything that got in his way for cheese. I feed mine a good quality gluten free dry food that’s made/sold by our local feed merchant, I use baked dry liver as high value treat which he loves it’s transformed his recall and he has 1/2 a tin of sardines twice a week which he absolutely adores. I used to work with horses and you aim to put weight in slowly over a period of months combined with appropriate exercise not sure of it applied to dogs.
He looks gorgeous they are such great dogs.

iloveeverykindofcat · 23/01/2023 05:44

Must be a Pembroke thing - ours have all been insane for cheese too!
Yes, he's a handsome lad despite his poor treatment. Nice head, well proportioned. I'm sure with some proper care he'll come lovely.

thirdtimeluckyorwhat · 23/01/2023 06:19

He will do just fine on Harrington's. He just needs time to settle down it's only been a week. Food and exercise and the rest will follow soon enough he is lovely
