just been stung by not understanding policy/ cost of things!
looking to insure a 10 year old jack russell who has had patella luxation recently.
Insurance paid out less than half the claim after excess and a 20% extra due to his age-fair enough.
The bit I want to rectify is I would like to pay for a much larger cover, in case of surgery/ major accident ( obvs excluding his now pre exsisting condition)
I went on a compare site- all I was offered from multiple companies was £1000 maximum per year.
any ideas please?
many thanks for your time

I think you are going to struggle to get anything with substantial cover and if you do you are going to be paying loads . Might be better to just save every month . Our Patterdale x is 12 and we’ve always been with Direct line for their lifetime policy and it’s over £100 per month now but I’m keeping it going as he has a few issues ( cataracts / paraphimosis/ a huge inoperable lipoma )

The older they get, the harder they are to insure unfortunately, especially if they have pre-existing conditions.

I doubt you'll find any policy that pays out more than that.

We have a 14 yo golden and a 9 year old springer! Insurance is now silly! We cancelled and will have to find the money when any vets bills that come our way! We understand the the risk!
I forget who we were insured with but I still had to pay a chunk and 10% of the bill anyway!
We just had a £500 bill 😬
The younger golden is still insured as it's still affordable and he is used in a working environment.

A friend of mine stopped health insurance for her elderly dog as it was so expensive. The one thing I would say is I would not go without 3rd party insurance but the Dogs trust will do this , and then the rest you can put in a pot for etc bills.

We have 3 dogs - the elder two we have never claimed on but it keeps going up

Just at the moment we have swapped the insurance and the cover ( with Tesco - believe it or not ) and lower premiums. But they had no pre existing conditions.

I would not be without 3rd party cover though ( see note above about the Dog's trust - hope still valid - haven't checked ) - I would do that and then just put the premuiums into a pot if that suits you

Not sure if that helps . Mine are 13 and 15.
