What are your tips for having a dog in the winter - what are you wearing? What are they wearing? How often are you washing them? Etc

DPup is 9 months old and, apart from going through a teenage phase when it comes to recall, is generally a delight. As he’s 9mo old, he’s a heatwave puppy - we got him just before the Easter holidays and so had very little experience of rain until recently and now it’s dark and cold as well and I am feeling slightly thrown. On yesterday morning’s walk, I had cold fingers but I’m not sure my usual leather gloves are quite what I want to be wearing. I have some waterproof trail shoes which have been great until now but they are just trainers so no use if I’m in long, wet grass or in mud or puddles. I have only just realised you can wash dog harnesses.
So what are your practical tips for having a dog in the winter?

Also have a high-viz lead, and a collar that lights up .

Short wellies, leggings for me (fleece lined for when its really cold) and a big long waterproof coat. Cross body bag but he also has a holder for poo bags that clips to his harness. Hat but no gloves or just fingerless ones. He sometimes wears an equafleece(front legs only) but only if its cold as he tends to swamp dive and if it gets wet it would keep him colder than his coat. Cocker spaniel. Groomer every 2-3months. He gets a hose down with hot tap after every walk unless hes just wet. Bath once a week or two. Towels on floor and his own blanket/throw for after he has dried a bit. Want a drying coat and a new fleece for him. Harness just hangs over radiator to dry after hosing down.

Brilliant thread, thanks. My last dog was easy, my next one is a cockapoo so I’m aware I need to know more!

For me, I find a long wool coat over whatever I’m wearing is fine. I have a chunky crochet cowl, which is both warm and if over my head keeps the rain off. Acrylic so it doesn’t absorb water, dries fast.

My coat is a textured, tweeded wool, so it doesn’t show marks. I brush any enthusiastic muddy paw prints off when it dries.

I prefer to wear an old pair of Clarks shoes with thick socks. I walk mainly muddy made paths in a country park- mucky and puddled, rather than deep mud.

Springer here who loves any mud and River gets ears full of brambles etc... no coat of any type was born to be wild! ..
We have a spray wash thing at the front step which fill with hot water on way out (mud daddy idea but from Screwfix i think about £10 ) sometime squirt shampoo but advised not to wash too often as ruins the oil in the coat. So often just feet and lower body.ruff tumble drying coat..
Washable rugs from Dunelm from front to back and wood floors...
Dh has muck boot wellies as does most of long walk and waterproofs with layers under..
I have fitflop wellies plus decent socks as crap feet...didrickson waterproof parka which is thermal and brilliant..turtledoves cashmere snood for whén cold as doesn't flap and super warm.. although not cracked gloves yet!

Can you find it on screwfix, or remember the name, or what to search for? I’ve tried washer, pump, spray, and am having no luck! Sounds really useful

I am a dog daycare / boarder / trainer. Thus, I have a variety of dogs, so cannot get clothing to fit them all. Some have their own (yay), but many do not.

For me:
EN343 coat for deep winter from work wear supplier.
Most of my other clothing comes from New Forest Clothing
Le Chameau wellies
Altberg boots
Snood for neck
Tilley hat
Glove / mitten thingies from Decathlon

For dogs:
Thermostatic mixer tap in garden (constant warm, mainly for my hands as the dogs don't give a shit).
Bath tub from Christies Direct
High velocity drier (a god send)
Mud daddy in van (about to upgrade this to a full water tank and hose in the van)
Various grooming brushes from Christies (Andis deshedding brush is a must).
Many many many towels
Cheap rugs from Dunelm

I’ve got a whippet. She’d go out wrapped in a blanket if I let her (or even not go out if I didn’t bully her into it!).
Last year my favourite thing ever was Hunter Snow Boots. Warm and waterproof. This year, I’ve found they make knee high ones. Wore them for the first time today. Amazing!

He wears a sweater when it's cold, and a rain coat for the wet.
I'm a rubber bootie wearer.

We have a lab and she would hate a coat. She goes out in all weathers, even deep snow, very happily. I don’t go out at the moment but in previous years I just wear a couple of layers and if it’s raining I put a mac on. I don’t like coats at all so rarely wear one.

I don’t put a coat on my lab either, although I’m toying with the idea of getting a light waterproof one, for those days when it buckets down. One that covers his back, rather than one that goes down his legs and everywhere.

I need a new equafleece this year, the current one has a tear that I have mended poorly. will take a look at Ryedale, thank you to the pp who mentioned that.
I like the craghoppers winter lined trousers and have a big craghoppers coat too, but only for the depths of winter as they are a bit too warm and bulky for all but the coldest weather. Great when I'm out all day though. I double up on my hands, woollen gloves with fleece mittens on top. Though the on off for the poo bags gets a bit annoying.
I prefer pockets to a cross body bag, so my coat must always have pockets. I haven't cracked the hat situation yet, all mine are either too warm or not warm enough. I'm eyeing up a couple of felt ones on vinted at the moment which I'm hoping might do the trick. I have a very light weight merino scarf which I love as it's easily stuffed into a pocket if I get too warm.
Most days I'm in leggings, walking boots and a long lightweight puffer coat. The soil here is chalky so I'm not dealing with a lot of mud though.
I wash the dogs paws if it gets mucky or when the gritting lorries are out but otherwise she doesn't really get dirty, and doesn't smell either, so a full wash is rare. My neighbours love their outdoor mixer shower tap for their spaniels though.
Towels in the car are my must have, so that I can protect the seats if we go out for a walk elsewhere and she gets wet or mucky. I've been mulling over one of the big padded dog car beds I keep seeing on insta as a better solution, but the price is putting me off.

This our first winter with him, may need a snow jacket too

Numerous Equafleece coats for the dog was once a week unless get dirty in between. Rain coat with fleece underneath if raining, if not knee length puffer coat. Always warm clothes underneath either coat depending how cold out.
