Older dog so restless in the evenings

Is this something that happens with age? Could it be a form of dog dementia?
Our Collie X is nearly 11. Over the past year he has become increasingly restless in the evenings, wants to go outside, begging for food, standing Infront of you whining. Often won't come up to sit with us on the sofa or go in his basket to settle. When he's outside in the evening he often starts barking at something and we have to bring him in. The vets have said he is slightly overweight so he can't have extra food but he is definitely fed enough! Today he has had a 40 min walk this morning, 40 mins with the dog walker at lunchtime and an hour out with me and the kids after school. But he's still incredibly restless. Any ideas? Do I just need to be firmer telling him to settle?

I recognised some of the behaviours in my dog as he got older. He made it to 16.5 yrs.

There were some challenging nights where he wanted to get up on the bed, then down, then out the door, then in, all night long. Some points I did t know how I could go on, could have cried with exhaustion, but when you love them so much and you know you’re on limited time you find a way.

Sorry to hear it’s getting tough.

The dementia pills brought our old boy back mentally. The meds for arthritis gave him relief physically.

Our dog (Jack Russell) is 17 and the same. 6pm onwards she’s nagging, whining, up on the sofa, down in her bed, wanting food, treats, a walk, out the garden, in, out, up down, whinge and whine and follow me everywhere all evening. We now go to bed at 8.30 and take her with us where she’ll then settle and sleep through to 5am. Our whole lives revolve around her, we don’t leave her for more than an hour or two and days out and holidays are definitely a distant memory.

I have a 15 year old cat who is acting in a very similar way. I appreciate that cats and dogs aren't the same. I need to take her back to the vets because i've noticed a blank look on her face sometimes and I have also thought about dementia.
She also meows a lot particularly in the evening and wants food a lot.
I hope you get your dog sorted and I'm sorry that I can only sympathise and not offer any real help.

My cocker spaniel is 13 1/2 and we've had to really limit his exercise otherwise he gets beyond it in the evenings. We do a 30 minute walk on a long lead in the morning, then a much shorter 15/20 minute walk late afternoon on a short lead. Any off lead running and he's in agony afterwards. He's on Galliprant for arthritis, and has 1/2 a paracetamol tablet 3 x a day. It's sad not doing the long walks anymore, but he's just past that now.
