Thought it was time for a new puppy thread, for anyone who has a pup currently or will be collecting their new family member in October or November.

Puppy incoming in 2 weeks. Haven’t owned a dog for 19 years and it’s 4 years since previous dog died. Excited but vv anxious about the puppy stages and getting it right and being knackered. Seen lots of videos of him and he is easily the boldest in the litter. Not sure whether it’s worth getting a full
playpen or just a soft crate?

Hi @shashbear
We found the modular playpens brilliant, we have two. One is currently in the garden so I can keep puppy safe when I need to pop back indoors. The other is currently being used a room divider to give our older dog some peace from the shark teeth.

Thanks will take a look!

How's everyone getting on?

We're one week in with our boy and he's doing fine. Older dog is still a bit scared of him but she has her own safe space and is getting lots of reassurance.
Toilet training going well but sleep still isn't great, and that's the hardest part at the moment. He settled better last night, because he decided to sleep in the kitchen instead of the extension, where obviously it was warmer, plus he was closer to the big girl.
One week to go until second DHP vaccine and hopefully out for walks a few days after that.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

A mixed week here but more good than not.

We had a fabulous walk on Monday, into the local town and up and down the high street. Lots of people, shouting school kids etc, men loading a van banging about. He was such a good boy, walking to heel, no pulling and keeping his attention on me. I was so pleased with him I could have burst.

A minor hiccup yesterday with the lead walking- whilst my youngest has a sports club I take puppy to the local park to mooch and sit on a bench and people watch, it’s become our routine. When we pulled up yesterday on the residential road outside the park he was very excited, wanting to pull to get to the park, so we turned around and practiced walking on the streets for ten min. The first few min were a bit of a disaster and he struggled to concentrate, but he did settle and remember to go forwards you need to be next to me, in front and we stop. We had a good few minutes at the end so I’m hoping despite the blip was overcome.

The bigger issue was he’s been attacked by TWO offlead dogs this week. Both times were completely unjustified. The first we were in the middle of a playing field doing some training. He was on lead. A male black lab ran across from the other side of the field, owner trailing behind not even calling. Firstly sniffed him but then air snapped and stood over him. I’m shouting at the owner to come get their dog, they’re walking over saying he’s friendly!! Ffs. Thankfully their dog did then go back.

The second time was worse. We were walking through the local wood, the path went past a clearing with benches. There was a large family group, multiple adults and kids playing, maybe a dozen or more. I called him to heel (he was already on the long line but loose and mooching) and I was really pleased as he was walking past, not looking at them, giving me his full attention. I could not have asked for more. We’d got past them and I suddenly hear barking. Two dachshunds come bowling at us, growling and barking, owners calling them frantically but completely ignored. The dogs were not messing about. The first one launched itself at my puppy and as it was mid air I kicked it, and it ran back. The second one followed. It wasn’t ideal and I don’t generally go round kicking dogs (!) but I wasn’t willing to let them terrify and injure my puppy, especially as it could impact how he views other dogs for life and it was the second time in quick succession.

We have puppy class this afternoon so I’m hoping we can do some more work on walking past distractions/other dogs to reinforce that you can trust me, focus on me, and still stay safe.

Sleeping is ok. Brilliant in that he’s ready to sleep, starting to get dopey at 630pm, we encourage him into his living room crate at about 7 and he instantly lies down to sleep without a fuss. We then chill out and watch tv with him next to us in the crate. He tends to wake once or twice before we go to bed, goes to the toilet and back in his crate without a fuss. He then wakes between 5.45-6.15. He goes to the toilet and then is happy to go back into bed for another 20/30 min. I appreciate that we get an evening of peace so I’m very grateful for that… but it would be lovely if he could just stretch is bladder that little bit longer! I don’t go back to sleep once he’s woken up the first time.

I hope your elder dog settles soon, @CoubousAndTourmaIet . We are still as we were, having to separate them frequently when he’s too much.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 11/10/2026 11:39

The lead walking sounds good overall @Newbabylabrador but OMG, what a nightmare with the antisocial dogs. That's horrendous. As you say, an encounter like that can really dent a puppy's confidence and affect how they relate to other dogs. I hope it won't have any long term implications. Sounds like a positive that you have puppy class today and he can have some calm dog encounters in a controlled environment. I do feel for you though, our previous pup was attacked and injured at 16 weeks by a bigger dog and it took him a long time to get over it. It also left me with a lot of paranoia about off-lead dogs and I hope you won't find that yourself...

Our pup is a good sleeper but still tending to wake in the early hours at the moment. Then he settles again until around 5.30 or 6. It's early days, we know he'll get there, but when he wakes he's quite vocal and I don't want him disturbing the neighbours. Last night is the first night he's relocated himself from one room to the other after being bedded down, and it was interesting that the big girl seemed to put herself within view of him, almost by way of reassurance, and he slept right beside the dog gate.

I hope your puppy class goes well and you can reinforce the positives for your little chap.

I feel we may have turned a bit of a corner, or at least started to turn! We have transitioned her to sleeping downstairs in her crate, with surprisingly little fuss. She also seems to have finally got the fact that of she pulls we don’t go forwards. By no means perfect yet, but at least it feels she’s starting to understand the concept. Squirrels and other dogs are still problematic but we’ll keep working on those. And we’ve been able to leave her in the house alone for a couple of hours at a time without her going mental. Fingers crossed we keep seeing progress

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 11/10/2026 14:37

That sounds like good progress @AirborneElephant , particularly the fact that she's settling by herself with no fuss. That's so often the biggest stumbling block with puppies. Hopefully the lead walking will continue to improve.

TreacherousPissFlap · 11/10/2026 14:47

We're doing good here all things considered, there are big changes afoot as STBXH and I are splitting up but he's taking them all in his stride.

We've been investigating day care and dog walkers and they've all been so positive about his behaviour and temperament, I know exactly what PP's mean when you're glowing with pride!

He is trying his luck on occasions, but I'm a tough old bag and won't put up with it so he's resigned to having to do what he's told 😆

There are a few issues linked to XH and the various visitors and services attending the house but it won't be an ongoing issue and I'm confident we can iron them out without too much hassle once things have calmed down a bit.

He has a trial at day care next week for a couple of hours, I feel quite tearful at the idea 🥹

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 11/10/2026 14:53

Doesn't sound like an easy time for you or pup @TreacherousPissFlap but it's great that the dog walkers and day care have given you positive feedback.

I hope the trial run goes well.

OP posts:
Newbabylabrador · 11/10/2026 18:16

We had a good time at puppy class 🥰.

He was very well behaved and was actually in between two others that were struggling to concentrate so actually quite a good practice with distractions.

My ten year old does all the handling at puppy class. Honestly I could burst watching them. They both try really hard.

They quite a few stays with owners walking away, towards, and around behind them today. Tbh it’s the exercise he finds easiest so it was nice for them to shine.

It went so well actually that actually we’ve been asked to move up a class next week.

They are ready to take the bronze, and nearly ready for silver so they are going to be working on extending the stays and recalling from distractions.

Good luck with the trial runs at dog-care @TreacherousPissFlap

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 11/10/2026 18:36

That sounds amazing @Newbabylabrador and very impressive handling skills from your 10 year old!
Glad pup has not been traumatised by the bad experiences earlier in the week.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 11/10/2026 18:42

Our two have been playing in the garden this afternoon. It was slightly nerve wracking to watch, given that pup is only 9 weeks old and our big girl is close to 50kg. But he's a very bold pup and wasn't at all daunted by her.
She's definitely more relaxed today and has actually gone face to face with him, whereas before, she was avoiding eye contact.

OP posts:
CoubousAndTourmaIet · 17/10/2026 09:01

So, our pup is 10 weeks now, time for an update.

He was dry and quiet through the night last night for the first time, albeit that we were up before 6am. I'm still very happy with that, especially as we don't crate, so he could have just toileted anywhere in the kitchen or extension.

We've started doing a bit of lead training at home. He has the second DHP vaccine on Monday, so it's at least another 10 days before he can go out. But we're doing a bit of general training and lead work. He's not food orientated so I'm training without treats again.

This week he has established a regular "witching hour" of mad zoomies and barking. Always around 6pm, when I'm cooking dinner and we're settling down to eat, which is not so great. Might try making some adjustments to his meal times and see if we can shift it around a bit as I'd prefer him to be quietly settled before we have dinner.

He's still barky. We've never had a barky pup before and he's #9 of same breed, so we've either been lucky before or unlucky this time. Really hoping it's just puppy exuberance and he will grow out of it to some extent. Otherwise we'll have to move to a very remote location with no neighbours for miles.

Hope everyone else has had a good week and all pups are doing well.

We’ve a 15 week old spaniel. Love her to bits already and also a 12 year old spaniel. Dogs are the best

May I join? This is Walt 8 week old (9 weeks tomorrow) Golden Retriever. He is our 6th GR. Came home on Wednesday, 5.30 hour journey, he was as good as gold!
So far so good, sleeping until 6 am, knows his name and sits beautifully😀
He has rung the training bells twice today to tell us he wants to go out to toilet.
We are both totally in love, I know he will soon turn into an evil land shark😃, but I have lived through it and come out the other side! My daughter has a 13 week old GR called Jesse... for al Breaking Bad fans, they have not set up a Meth lab yet.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 18/10/2026 19:12

Hi @Tootyfilou
Wow! What a handsome puppy! It sounds as if you're a one-breed family with your 6 GR and your daughter having a partner in crime for little Walt! I love that because I'm a one-breed person too (PMD)

Your boy is sleeping a lot better than my boy, I must admit! The toilet training sounds incredibly advanced for one so young and I'm not surprised that you are smitten with him.

But yes, indeed, the teething nightmare lies ahead of us in the coming weeks...😨

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 18/10/2026 19:29

@Tootyfilou I totally don't belong on this thread, but I had a feeling and I was right. Love to see Golden puppies 😍

Also @TreacherousPissFlap hope everything went okay at daycare.

Ducking back out again now 😁

Newbabylabrador · 19/10/2026 07:37

Hello all,

I hope everyone’s week has gone well.

How did the daycare trials go?

Our big news of the week- they passed their bronze! Yay for them!

It was really good timing actually as this week he’s been of the (unfortunate) opinion that perhaps heeling beautifully might be optional… it might be more exciting to pull over there? It’ll pass with consistency I’m sure but ten year old was a bit disheartened that he was starting to struggle holding his attention, so it was a nice boost.

Recall is definitely improved this week, and we’ve started having more off long line time. If we see distractions then we pop it back on as a safety net just in case but he’s been pretty good!

Unfortunately 5.30 has been a good time to start the day for the last few days… 🥱

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 19/10/2026 08:31

Congratulations to both your youngsters on the bronze certification @Newbabylabrador !
Your and DC's training routine with pup sounds impressive.
I sympathise with regard to the early starts though.

I wish I could say training was going well here, but it isn't. We're still struggling with his tummy issues and restless sleep. Our poor baby hasn't got off to a great start and we have no idea if it's food related or a side effect of vaccines and wormers. Never gone through anything like this with previous pups and it's very hard.

Vets today, supposedly for second DHP vaccine, unless they decide not to do it because of his tummy and he gets dosed up on Pro-Kolin.

Hope everyone else has a good start to the week.

Marnie is 10 weeks old today and has been home for 3 days. She slept 11-7 on my chest for the first two nights and last night in her crate with me sleeping on the floor beside her. In fact, she's looked pretty disgruntled when I've woken her up at 7 every morning!

She's doing 'okay' with toilet training but mainly because we're been taking her outside every 30 minutes when she's awake; I don't think she's got any sense of why she's going outside though. Rather than heading to the door when she needs a wee, she heads to her playpen and goes in there instead..

We haven't started any other training yet - we thought we'd give her the weekend to settle in first. She's very chilled in many ways and has settled in so well, but could easily become a velcro dog. She loves falling asleep on laps and gets very cross if anyone dares to leave the room without her! We'll start working on that (I say with her asleep on my lap as I type).

She's met one of our cats and they've booped noses. He joined her sitting on my lap last night, but gets a bit freaked out when she goes into crazy puppy play mode. He doesn't run away though, just watches her from a distance in a state of 'WTF is that?'. The other two cats took on look at her in the garden and jumped back over a fence, but they spend most of their time outside anyway.

She's had her second injection on Friday, so we took her out in the sling for a wander yesterday. Lots of 'oohs and aahs' from the people she came across.

Pic included because... well... she's absolutely adorable!

Sorry to hear that @CoubousAndTourmaIet .

Our puppy has had the odd tummy issue- the first night and next day, and then at a later date when we let him chew a camel skin for too long.

We used similar to pro-kaolin, a tube of pre/probiotics, I think it was synequin or something like that. Orange tube, about £7 from Amazon and he was back to solid inside 12hrs, having been up multiple times in the night with an explosive bum. Hopefully you get given something similar and it sorts it out.

What food is he on? Was he completely solid etc at the breeder or to start with?
