Would a soft fabric cone work for my dog?

DDog has a burst anal gland so an open wound that is bleeding. We saw the vet this afternoon and he’s got painkillers/anti inflammatories plus antibiotics. Plus a plastic cone. He’s really struggling with it. Lots of panting and unable to relax. We took it off briefly for him to have a drink and eat before we gave him the first lot of medication.

He’s a miniature poodle so long snouted.. The vet said a doughnut collar wouldn’t work to keep him from getting to the wound. Do you think a cone made of soft fabric would work?

The donut collar works for my dog. Mine was nearly drowning in her own saliva with one of those awful cone collars.

We found the fabric cones to cause friction burns under the neck. The doughnut ones worked fine.

You could try a fabric one or even a doughnut collar some are thicker than others and may work but keep a very close eye on him all day to see if he can get around them
If they don't work you can always sell them or see if anyone has one you could borrow

Honestly poodles are smart id bet he would find a way around it if hes able to
My dog just had a week with a cone of shame and figured out how to catch it on corners and pull it off and he's not the smartest by a long shot

Are you sure that the upset is all about the cone and not pain?
If he's been examined today he could be stressed from that as well and if he's been poked and prodded it could be more pain than he was used to with the abscess

It might be worth asking the vet about anything you can give him to calm him if he's still very stressed with the cone tomorrow
Years ago I had a dog who was prescribed a mild seditive for a few days after an operation as he was such a drama llama

Thanks. I’ve ordered a couple of fabric cones from Amazon - 2 different sizes as it’s hard to work out the right collar size alongside the right depth.

Ddog managed to get the plastic cone off this evening. I’d left the room thankfully only briefly. It’s really very basic. It has gauze bandage stuff threaded through the plastic loops to tie up and I think the material stretches if DDog tries to remove the cone. Also we measured him for a fabric cone and the vet one is bigger than the larger size one we’ve ordered.

I took DDog minus cone on a walk round the block on a short lead. That worked - he only actually turned his head once - mostly he was too busy sniffing and cocking his leg!

‘Good point about DDog being in pain which is causing the upset @FuzzyBumbleeBee He’s still not moving much (with the cone on) but he doesn’t seem so stressed now. He’s wanted lots of petting and has tried to get close to us despite the cone.

Unfortunately DDog has the cone for 2 weeks. We’ve just cancelled a planned holiday next week to the West Country - thankfully it was refundable up til tomorrow.
