Hi all,

Looking for some recommendations for my next dog. I have some ideas but it’s always fun and interesting to see what other people think. I know most people will recommend another spaniel and I’m not opposed to that but would like to see any other suggestions too.

I currently have a 2 year old working line English Springer Spaniel female and a 14 year old Cairn Terrier male. The next dog will not be until after my older dog passes away which hopefully will not be for a while- but I want to start thinking and planning now as I always have two dogs.

My springer is a small one, at just 14kg and 16 inches at the withers. I’m looking for a dog that is a similar size to her really but can compromise on that. I am a single adult with no kids. I work from home and live semi-rurally. I have a footpath at the end of my street that takes me straight out into open countryside across several routes where we can walk for miles. It also has a river running through for swimming and splashing (dogs not me!) and is mostly open fields and some patches of woodland. It goes on endlessly across public footpaths as it joins a national long distance walking path. If I keep walking I can also do an 8-10 mile circuit from my house entirely across countryside that takes me to a large woodland area. I also have a large field at the back of my house which has long grass and I use to do shorter walks and gundog work with my spaniel in. Across the road is a large urban ish park but secure with open fields and a river. Within a short bus or train journey I have country parks, forests, woodlands, more countryside, beaches and a secure dog field with agility equipment.

My ideal dog would be:

  • Active enough to genuinely enjoy my lifestyle. I’m a runner. I don’t do mad distances or anything- I’ll run three times a week with my current dog in harness. Usually around 6-8k speed session, 10-20K long run and a 5K parkrun (or alternatively a race) on the weekend. I do as many canicross and dog friendly races as I can. The distances are usually 10K with the odd 5K thrown in. Maybe once or twice a year a half marathon. I don’t run or race longer than a half marathon with dogs. On a normal, non-running day I walk my current dog for 2-3 hours a day but this is all off lead over open country, swimming in the river, playing (some) fetch, doing gundog work finding scented dummies etc. A couple of times a year I take a week off work and spend the entire week doing day hikes somewhere like the Lake District or other national park.
  • Friendly and sociable- I don’t need it to be everyone’s BFF but I do want a dog that is not likely to be quarrelsome with strangers or other dogs. I can’t drive and never will drive due to a disability I have and so I get about a lot on public transport. I’m very good at it and we get to some excellent places still. However, this means we are often in close contact with other people and animals. I would also like it if the dog would enjoy playing with my current girl who is quite boisterous and rough in her play.
  • Likely to be reliable off lead with training
  • Likely to be comfortable being left alone for a few hours when needed. I work from home but obviously as a single adult there are times I have to leave the home and can’t bring the dogs with me. This means the dogs are alone as I have no partner or family member who can stay in with them.

Dogs I have considered:

  • Another English Springer- Same as my current dog. Fine but would also like to see if anything else could fit too!
  • Working Cocker/Sprocker- again, fairly similar to my existing dog. Same sort of thing as getting another springer although I’ve heard cockers can be harder work than springers in terms of things like recall/anxiety/guarding.
  • Brittany- Fairly rare in the UK but I do like the look and size of these but admittedly don’t know much about them. But they are probably at the top of my list currently.
  • Welsh Springer Spaniel- Again, I like the look and size but don’t know much apart from some basic research which suggests they could be a good fit.
  • Vizsla- These seem ideal on paper apart from being slightly bigger than what I want and I have also heard they can have a lot of problems with anxiety and nerves.
  • German Shorthaired Pointer- probably a bit too big for me to easily navigate public transport with.

What I don’t think I want:

  • Herding breeds- Initially they seem like a good fit. However, I am admittedly, not much into trick training or agility or what not. I provide my dogs with enrichment at home, I do scent work in the house and play with them and give them lots of natural enrichment and gundog work. But I’m really not interested in training loads of tricks or doing various doggy activities except canicross. Also, I haven’t really clicked well with most of the ones I’ve met- I’m more of a gundog person.
  • Terriers- I love my Cairn but terriers in general are not for me and he will be my last terrier.

Sorry for the essay! Would love some opinions. Essentially I’m a gundog person really lol but would consider other options too!

Size, size, size.

If you are on public transport and already have a spaniel then you don't want anything bigger.

I am currently travelling on public transport with my GSD, and his body footprint is about the most I would think is possible for travel. So two spaniel size would be fine.

Letsgoforaskip · 15/08/2026 21:58

I think any of these dogs would flourish in the environment you can provide for them.
I was going to suggest a Dalmatian as they are built for endurance. I also love the traditional gun dogs. I used to ride out with 3 labradors for hours. One of my childhood friends had a fabulous viszla. Our neighbour has a stunning GSP who is very sweet natured. My mother also has an excellent poodle, who has made me see the breed in a new light - she is very clever, entertaining, fun and loving.
As a PP said, I’m aware my suggestions are very anecdotal! I’m sure you will enjoy whatever you choose. My mother always says that a good dog is a well exercised dog!

Sagres · 15/08/2026 22:01

A Brittany or a working English Setter would be my suggestion

chasetheace99 · 15/08/2026 22:20

Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever - very sweet natured, best dog ever

Undercoverpepsicola · 15/08/2026 22:25

A flat coat retriever would tick all your boxes except for size. That said I do manage our two (plus two toddlers) on public transport.

Birchwoods · 15/08/2026 22:29

A working type lab of course! You absolutely can’t beat a lab, the perfect all-rounder.

LoyalAquaAnt · 15/08/2026 22:33

Colinthedaxi · 15/08/2026 16:27

While I think the poodle idea above is great I’m going to throw in an other outlier… Bavarian mountain hound (a bitch as they are smaller)

Oh great, now I want one 🙄😁

EnglishRain · 15/08/2026 22:54

What you need, is a golden retriever! They’re phenomenal. A working one would be right up your street.

Nothing will love you like a BMH!!!

Molleeeee · 15/08/2026 16:03

You could get a gsp if you love and I mean really love teaching recall again and again and again

From personal experience, I cannot stress this enough 🤣

EagerTaupePlayer · 16/08/2026 10:52

Thanks all. Some really interesting suggestions. I think my current shortlist is probably Brittany versus Welsh springer versus Toller!

Do like a Lab but I think with two dogs on a busy train or bus it might be a bit too big.

My friend has a Hungarian bred vizla and it’s smaller than average- I’d say it’s a medium sized dog- apparently they breed them smaller there. Fantastic dog- energetic without being manic and lovely temperament. I’m am not a dog person and that’s the one dog I’ll actually volunteer to dog sit.

tizwozliz · 16/08/2026 11:09

A lab is the obvious one missing from that list, working lines, are going to be smaller than a gsp and not too dissimilar in size to a viszla, height wise although normally a bit heavier. Standard poodles in my experience are bigger than all of the above.

21kg of pure happiness.

I have two female working line labs and it's no problem taking them places/on public transport on my own. They go running with the e other half but in reality they don't break out of a trot 😂

I'm not quite sure why people are recommending setters if you want something with good recall

Suggest me a (probably) gundog breed!

I do have to mention the Welshies recall is famously poor, so bear that in mind!

Pixietop · 16/08/2026 13:05

Working lab, my bitch is only 22kg at a year, and there's the saying that a lab is born half trained, a spaniel dies half trained 😉

Silverbirchleaf · 16/08/2026 13:33

My working lab is around 28Kg at four years. English show labs tend to be bigger, heavier with a stockier build.

Likeiloveyou · 16/08/2026 13:50

Flat coated retriever might fit the bill. Smaller than a lab, bigger than a spaniel.

Love their humans and their toys. Very intelligent and easy to train.

I agree! My dad and step mum have had 3 black flatties, all from the same breeder and all quite different in personality. The breeder takes care to match you with a puppy that will suit your needs. The first was a sweetheart, fairly energetic, terrible guard dog though. Our garage was broken into two or three times. Not a peep. I came in late from curfew, she'd bark the house down 😁 The next was very relaxed, just a loving happy dog, content with walks or to curl up at home. The third, their current one, is known as the hooligan. Again, loving, great with other dogs, but loves to be out and about and is more playful than the previous. They've all been very sweet and no issues with other dogs (apart from when a Ridgeback sniffed middle dog's behind, she did not like that at all!), and if I were ever to be a dog person instead of a cat person, I'd definitely consider a flattie.

tizwozliz · 16/08/2026 14:47

All of the flat coated retrievers I've ever met are much bigger than my labs. I'd avoid for the cancer risk alone irrespective of size.

baddayformeredith · 16/08/2026 15:08

My friend got a German short haired pointer as a second dog to her spaniel for similar reasons to yours. They seem like a good match. Also less coat maintenance than a spaniel.
I only know 2 vizlas, both neurotic and anxious and can become afraid of the weirdest things, e.g. livestock suddenly appeared in a field they walked near and they started refusing to go for walks for a while.

Weird. I have had labs and now have a flattie. The flattie is significantly smaller than the labs and definitely leaner/lighter. He’s about collie sized, as are his siblings.

JackieGoodman · 16/08/2026 15:47

@chasetheace99 that’s what I want for my next dog 😍
We have always had border collies but as we (DH & I) are getting older (and our current BC is an absolute stress-head) it’s time for something (slightly) calmer.
We like the size of BC’s and it seems Tollers are similar size, energetic but less prone to OCD, stress than BC’s.
Pic added of one of these cuties 😍

also DH is (used to be ) a ginger so perfect 👌

Suggest me a (probably) gundog breed!
GrannyGoggles · 16/08/2026 18:35

Flat coats: v sweet natured, large, seriously dim, prone to cancer

Pleasedontdothat · 16/08/2026 18:46

You need a Toller! They tick all your boxes.. they’re the smallest retrievers (my current boy is about 19kg), very trainable, lovely, friendly, happy-go-lucky personality. Good with other dogs, children, cats - they have busy brains so thrive when they have things to do but also have an ‘off’ switch. We’ve just been doing some agility practice and he’s now snoozing on the sofa. The only downside is there can be quite a long wait to get one.
