Vulnerable Dog Breeds UK - do you have one?

Hi all,

I was having a read about vulnerable dog breeds in the UK and learned about the Otterhound, which I'd never come across before, but have now practically fallen in love with.

My two don't feature but I wondered if anyone has one of these dogs or another breed and wanted to share pics or experiences?

I'm not sure what makes a breed vulnerable in the first place eg traits, temperaments, fads etc so would be interesting to hear views!

I have a miniature poodle. You would think poodles are endangered because on nearly every walk someone exclaims that you don’t actually see an actual poodle these days.

This is so true. And so much nicer than the crosses.
And you’re right about these doodle, poo crosses becoming so popular that they are a main cause of the dearth of native British breeds. I just can’t understand it. They are bred from mixes of breeds that in their pure form voluntarily have brought in health tests for breeding stock to ensure only healthy puppies are born ( of course I know that puppy farms fake this). Yet these cross breeds won’t be having these tests, my belief, I’m willing to be proved wrong. Now I’ve heard of vets saying that they’re getting some real health problems amongst them.
And the price of them! As much if not more than many pedigree puppies. A young woman I know told me that her mum was besotted with the idea of getting one of these poo breed puppies. So her daughter tracked one down & paid £5,000 for a puppy for her mum’s birthday. FIVE THOUSAND!!!! I was gobsmacked….for essentially a mongrel. I don’t breed now but when I was breeding & showing I didn’t charge anywhere near that for a puppy, far more important to get a good home for my quirky breed than the money.

I often chat to other dog walkers and I have to say that many owners of the poodle cross breeds are usually up for a moan about their dogs. The common complaints are separation anxiety and resource guarding. I just nod, feeling smug that my poodle is perfect. 🥰

I have a wire haired fox terrier, they have gone from being the most popular dog breed 100 years ago, to now being a vulnerable breed. I am always stopped by people saying their grandparents used to have one.

Yes, really popular in Edwardian times.
Have you read Three Men in a Boat😁?
proper title is Three Men in a Boat not Forgetting the Dog. Brilliant 😂

My most favourite book of all time. The Fox Terrier is called Montmorency.
My grandfather kept Airdales, another breed you rarely see now, the biggest of the terrier breeds.
Virtually every terrier breed originates in the UK.

So many lovely dogs, I was desperate for an Otterhound when I was younger but I was so stupid I didn't know about the Kennel club find a breeder scheme, or may be they didn't have it then. I am too old now to take on another when my current one goes. My last dog was an English foxhound and 48 kgs, I love a big dog

Saw a Welsh terrier at the weekend. She was lovely.

At the moment, I f have a lab, but would consider a vulnerable breed next. Can anyone recommend a lab-like breed?

We had one when I was a child and of late have seen a few around and about including today.
