Overlapping puppy insurance

We brought home our cockapoo puppy last Sunday and when I changed the microchip from the breeders details to mine I got 5 weeks free insurance with Agria. Have spent the last week looking into insurance and while Agria get good reviews they are one of the dearest.

i know most insurers don’t cover you for the first 14 days so if I was to go with a different insurer can I start it in say 2 weeks time so that I’m still covered by Agria in the 14 days it doesn’t cover or would there be an issue with being covered by 2 companies at the same time?

Also if anyone has recommendations for insurance companies that would be great, thanks

You can have over-lapping insurance but you absolutely cannot claim against both, I believe.

Just make sure whatever you get has excellent coverage. £10K at least.

Thanks, I get that about claiming. Was just thinking if I can overlap it would avoid having 2 weeks uncovered.

yes will definitely get at least that, my eyes have been opened in the last few days as to how expensive vets can be!

My 5 year old needed two vet visits within the first few weeks, so when I switched to Petplan she had exclusions on her policy. Her free insurance was with KC and they were far too expensive to continue with. At the time it was about £50 compared to £18.
My last puppy was insured with Petplan from 6 weeks old to ensure she was fully covered when I got her. She did come with free insurance, so technically the policies overlapped.

It is completely standard practise to have the two weeks overlap.
Congratulations on your new puppy!

Ours too and we’ve ended up staying with KC at enormous ongoing expense to avoid the exclusions.
Now I always recommend to people to get their own insurance in place from the beginning and ignore the free weeks that puppy comes home with.

@dogisadream That was what I’d intended to do wish I hadn’t gone with the free one now. Just need to hope we don’t need a vet before it kicks in

Yes definitely get ot overlapping. If anything happens during the overlap you just need to ensure both companies know what's going on and can sort out who can cover what.

We had a new kitten have a serious allergic reaction to her initial vaccinations - it's really important not to have a gap.
