Painting and decorating with a dog?

fuckedoffwiththesummer · 30/06/2026 12:29

Has anyone decorated (painted) with dogs?
I really need to paint my stairwell, but worried how/if the fumes will affect DDog?
It's easy enough to keep him out of the way during the day whilst work being carried out, but he sleeps with me so will be passing through the painted area once a day
Does anyone please have any advice or similar anecdote's? I can't be the only person!
Thank You :)

I normally use a paint brush and rollers, my dog isn’t that compliant 😂

HappiestSleeping · 30/06/2026 12:36

@doodleygirl - I thought similar 🤣

@fuckedoffwiththesummer I look after dogs, and so had several in and out the house during a spell of decorating last year. I just kept them out of the rooms for a few hours after painting. The paint is usually touch dry enough for them to walk past after about two hours. Just don't let them cock about near it until it is fully dry.

I made sure I used scrubbable paint, so when they shake themselves off when they walk in after rain, I can wipe the paint down relatively easily.

Yabu to not consider using a brush/roller...

I wouldn't worry about the fumes necessarily - I'd be concerned re: his tail wagging against the newly painted walls - ask me how I know!

Eelge · 30/06/2026 12:48

I'd be concerned about trying to keep dog hairs out my paint!

Lots of decorating done here in the last year. Two dogs no reactions or problems. As a PP says it does dry quite quickly too.

Try it with cats. They like to rub their fur up against wet paint.

We've decorated our whole house with a dog and multiple cats - they're all a bit weird but they were like that before we decorated too Wink

DS's room has the radiator when you walk through the door - try getting gloss out of a dogs tail!!!

I thought this was going to be about dog hair getting in the paint! That’s the issue we have, we normally cordon off the room but obviously harder to do with a hallway.

Ive never thought about the fumes, I’m sure the dog will be fine.

EdithStourton · 01/07/2026 21:18

Is this for emulsion, gloss or both?
I recently emulsioned our hallway with two dogs in the house, and it was no problem at all.
if I'm using gloss, I keep them away because otherwise you can guarantee that no only will they get gloss onto them, they will get the gloss onto other things as well. Don't ask me how I know...

I thought this was about training your dogs to help with the painting and decorating. That would be great although not sure my dogs could reach much above knee height. Skirting board specialists?
