Grass seed aftermath

Our beautiful dog (7.5) was unlucky to get their first grass seed in the paw last weekend: she was clearly lame and I took her to the vets on Monday. They said they could feel a ‘foreign being’ in her paw but it was late in the day and could we come back first thing with no breakfast to have it checked out. Next morning, at the vets waiting room, whatever it is bursts and bloody paw etc with obvious big hole in the paw.

She has sedation, it’s cleaned out, we come home. All good but the weather is not helping as she’s highly stressed and panting. Leg is wrapped.

Thursday follow up apt, they remove the wrapping and say ‘ok cone her’. Cone is huge as it turns out she’s highly dexterous and able to reach foot, stressful all around and we all finally get some sleep. Storms not helping,
poor dog.

Satday apt, suspected infection, hole still weeping, extra strong antibiotics. Poor baby not sleeping unless she can get under our bed .. so cone HAS to come off, keeps licking leg: we’ve tried to cover it, she’s getting it off.

Today we can see it’s gone pussy again, she’s got the cone on as much as possible when awake, she’s in super strong antibiotics and just isn’t eating. I’m following her around with water almost begging her to drink 🙈

She has another apt tomorrow and I just don’t know how to help her right now? The only food she’s having is when we wrap her multiple antibiotics in meat but the minute the cone comes off she’s after the foot. We’ve wrapped it in (clean) poo bags or a plastic bag to protect it from her mouth bacteria but she’s relentless… 😫😫

I’m going to be blunt I’m afraid. The cone needs to stay on. No excuses. She will sleep perfectly fine. To do otherwise is failing your dog and making her ill.
I had a dog 24/7 in one for 5 weeks after major surgery to remove part of his jaw. It CAN be done

edit- if she is genuinely stressed to the point where she cannot acclimatise, speak to your vet about sedatives

Do not take the cone off! Hand feed her if necessary. Get a bigger cone and her collar if she can reach her foot with the one provided or can take it off.
The infection will never go away if she continues licking. Plus, wounds on paws are a bugger to heal, so you are in for the long haul with the cone & feeding regime.

Hope she will feel better soon.
