Keeping dogs clean

We have two young dogs (1yr and 2yrs) and they are very smelly.
Both hate water (older one is a rescue we’ve not long had, and was abused so is scared of everything!)
I’ve tried wipes with previous dogs, but didn’t find them particularly effective.
does any have any suggestions as to how I can make them a bit less pungent???

What is it they smell of?? Is it their breath or their coat or are they rolling in things? What is their diet like as that can also influence how a dog smells. Could the smell be coming from their ears?

What are you feeding them, in my limited experience my 8 year old border collie only smelt when I fed cheap rubbish food that the breeder recommended. Giving too many baths strips away natural oils, but obviously depends on breed of dog.

Do you dry them after the rain? My dog is particularly smelly at the moment with all the wet weather we’ve had. I find if I spend ages towel drying him well rather than letting him air dry then the smell improves. Plus he needs his teeth cleaned I think.

If they smell of fox poo, ketchup is your friend.

Thanks all.
They stink of wee! From rolling in the grass in the garden.
The younger one has allergies (her skin was, all red and flaky) but that’s now managed with her diet - she had hypoallergenic kibble.
Vet gave her eyewateringly expensive meds, which helped a little, but literally within 2 meals on the hypo stuff, she was 100% better!

Younger one on the left, rescue on the right.

Have you got a shower? I shower mine (all rescues) in the walk in shower. Start by introducing a licky Matt. Stick it to a wall with their favourite thing on (doggy peanut butter, pate, etc) Make it something they love. Then, move it into the shower. Don’t turn it on, just give it to them in there. They will get the hang of it, then eventually, turn on the shower and give them a gentle wash. Always works for me. My little ones go in the Belfast sink but yours are a bit too big for that 🥰🤣

@Buildingthefuture That’s a brilliant idea!! Thank you-a licky mat is now on my shopping list!!

Another vote for licky mats. They're great. Dog so busy licking, he almost forgets he's being showered (almost) 😄

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/06/2026 15:31

I can’t cope with smelly dogs so mine gets a shower if he’s stinky 🤷‍♀️

noctilucentcloud · 20/06/2026 16:21

I used to take mine for a long-ish walk in the rain when he began to get a bit stinky (shiwer only over the bath and too heavy a dog to lift). Worked pretty well for normal stinkiness and he'd be lovely and fluffy once he'd dried out.

Lovely dogs @MargoisanA1arsehole . For the one with allergies use an oatmeal based dog shampoo , we used Bugalugs oatmeal and tea tree on our late dog who had skin issues .
