Is it normal for an older dog to be slow after sedation?

Hi all.

Looking for some reassurance.

Our St Bernard is 7 in a few weeks. She had sedation on Thursday AM as she had a scan. No surgery etc.

Since then she has been so slow to get back to her normal self and I just wanted someone to hold my hand and tell me this is normal. We are lucky in that she has been relatively healthy - the only time she has had any sedation was she was was spade and she was her normal self I'd say no more than 24 hours later - granted she was younger then.

She's barely eaten - a few little bits but nothing like her usual self - she's drinking lots and she's having frequent watery stools - is this just an older dog taking longer to get back to normal?

I hate seeing her so down - I feel guilty now that we had the scan - (thankfully all came back clear!)

Thanks in advance :) x

I'd give the vet a bell to ask. They'll be able to say this is normal don't worry keep an eye on her and call us if she doesn't pick up, or no that doesn't sound quite right bring her in.

Yeah - I popped in yesterday to pick up some medicine and they said 48 hours to get back to normal - as a minimum.

So that takes us to now - she's eaten a little more this morning. So I guess that's a good sign.

Keep asking the vet & take her in for a check if you’re not happy.
The reason I say this is several years ago one of my small dogs went to a vet, a new one to me as my regular vet had retired & the surgery closed down, to have a very small benign lump removed. When I collected her despite it being a very hot summer day, she was icy cold but was assured she was fine & ready to go home. She was extremely lethargic next & following day, not eating. I took her back & was again told she was fine. This happened once more after two more days of her being the same. Then the following day she managed to climb on my knee…..and died there. She was a previously healthy small terrier breed, five years old.
So please take her back if you’re not happy & I hope your vet is better than that one was. Needless to say none of my other dogs ever went there.

Thanks both.

She seems better and more like herself yesterday/today.

What a relief - Thanks for putting me at ease.

@Darklane So sorry to hear about your poor doggy! 😢x
