Dogs in heat

How are your dogs presenting at the moment in this heat ? 2.5 year cockapoo and she has been sick twice today and is really not herself. Lethargic, not eating. Hasn’t drank much. Although I put some ham in her water bowl so she had to drink the water to get to the ham. Otherwise done all the usual, cool vest, ice kongs etc.

Sickness for general heat is really not normal.
Id say your dog was ill and something else is going on

He's miserable. I wrapped a wet towel round him earlier which seems to have helped a little. We have two fans going in the living room but it gets the sun all day, and even with the curtains closed since 7am it's still over 28 inside. We are west London though, so it's been 35 outside. Might offer him some frozen yogurt soon.

I walked my dog at 6am and I’ve had all the curtains and blinds closed. I’m dipping her in her paddling pool every couple of hours. She’s not loving any of it though.

We walked him at 5:30 this morning. We have shut the windows and blinds to keep it as cool as possible but he’s definitely struggling now.

My house is 28 degrees, poor ddog hasn’t moved from the mat by the front door all day.

He had some frozen yogurt earlier and liked that, will take him out about 9pm.

It’s my first summer with a dog (an older terrier). She keeps moving around the house to find the sunniest spot and then falls asleep. When I encourage her back to the shade she stays about 5 mins and then heads back to the sunny spot.
We were at a country pub at the weekend and she kept moving into the sun there too. When we moved the umbrella to give her shade, she’d just move back into the sun.
I’m working in the basis that she has access to shade and water, she’s not panting and she doesn’t feel too warm so she’s probably ok but happy to take advice from anyone.
It’s been high twenties here.

Tiddlywinks63 · 26/05/2026 19:54

We walked the dogs at 5 this morning, they have free run of the house and garden. There are tiled floors in the kitchen and hall, water bowls in several places and it’s up to them where they lay.
Both will happily roast on the patio 🙄
No walk this evening, it’s diabolically hot, we’re having a thunderstorm but we must be right on the edge because the skies out the back are clear blue and there’s bright sunshine despite it pouring down!

My dog is his normal self, but we've been out less (just a walk at 7:30) and now he's being a PITA.

I'm in London, 30° in my living room.

tiramisugelato · 26/05/2026 20:13

He's a bit restless but absolutely fine otherwise. It was 31 here this afternoon.

Are cooling vests safe for dogs ?

I’d be concerned that if the dog doesn’t like it/ gets too cold from it, a vest is difficult to do anything about. Can you pop a towel in the freezer and pop it next to where the bed is and then pooch can choose how much cooling if any is needed?

I work with dogs. I am trying to walk them out of the heat, but mainly for my benefit. They don't give a shit. As long as they have shade, walk on soft ground, and have plenty of water. I have had a dog in for daycare the last two days, and all he wanted to do us go and stretch out in the sun.

I had to bring him in as it made me feel hot.

DarkForces · 26/05/2026 21:53

My pup got uncomfortable earlier so I gave her a cool (not cold) bath and let her dry off naturally. She perked right up after a dip

LuvMyPuppers · 27/05/2026 05:57

My boys were lethargic but they are like cats, anyway. They love to sleep. They lounged around, didn't really care to do much and drank water. We didn't go outside, yesterday, and may be similar today. They played in the garden on the weekend and were free to come in and out as they pleased. They liked to be in the shade, mostly, and sunbathed when it was nearer 7-8pm

I got biffed,.whined at, laid on and moaned at for about two hours. Mines very dramatic though.
